Dec. 30, 2011

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. -- South Carolina sophomore Blaine Woodruff wrapped up the inaugural Patriot All-America Invitational on Friday with a final-round 81 (+10) at Wigwam Golf Club.

Woodruff finished the event tied for 60th overall and tied for 19th in the Ramon Padilla flight with a three-day score of 228 (+15). Alabama sophomore Cory Whitsett won the event after shooting a 5-under 66 on Friday, finishing the week with a score of 199 (-14).

Woodruff, who represented Army Staff Sergeant Nino D. Livaudais during the week, competed against a field that featured 84 collegiate golfers from across the nation, including 21 of the world's top-100 ranked amateurs.

The Wigwam Golf Club, along with the Arizona Golf Association and the Golf Coaches Association of America, partnered with the Folds of Honor Foundation to host the inaugural Patriot All-America. To show support for Folds of Honor, each golfer carried a commemorative PING golf bag bearing the name of a fallen soldier.

How Animals Stay Warm with Blubber

blubber warmth Can landlubbers use blubber?: Discover one of the tricks some animals have evolved to keep warm in chilly waters. Image: George Retseck

Key concepts
Temperature
Heat transfer
Adaptation
Insulation
Fatty tissue

Introduction
Have you ever wondered how whales and other marine mammals survive and keep warm in the cold oceans? Warm-blooded mammals can live in these chilly conditions because their bodies have some cool warmth-saving adaptations, thanks to generations of natural selection.

In other words, to pass on characteristics (via their genes), the predecessors of modern marine mammals had to overcome different challenges to reproduce, and their descendants received the genes that allowed for their survival. This kind of change in organisms over time is what fuels evolution. An important adaptation for marine mammals is blubber, a thick, insulating layer of fat beneath the skin that helps to keep body warmth in and the cold of the air or water out. Will a layer of fake blubber?in the form of shortening?help you keep from getting cold?

Background
Mammals that have evolved to live in cold waters, such as whales, seals, sea lions and polar bears, commonly have a layer of blubber. Whether they are living in cold waters near the North Pole or around Antarctica or are visiting the deep ocean, these animals' blubber is vital to their survival. During the winter, the air in the Arctic (the northernmost part of the world) is often below ?40 degrees Celsius (?40 degrees Fahrenheit). Antarctica, the coldest place in the world, can be below ?60 degrees C (?76 degrees F). Depending on the species, whales dive more than 400 or 500 meters (about one fourth of a mile) deep in the ocean, where the water can be colder than 12 degrees C (54 degrees F).

Blubber helps these marine mammals from getting too cold. (Cold-blooded marine animals, such as fish, sharks or crabs, do not need to stay warm and can let their body temperatures get closer to that of the water. Thus, they do not need to have this extra insulation.) Blubber is a thick layer of fat (adipose) tissue. Animals store extra digested food in the form of adipose tissue, which contains molecules called lipids. Adipose tissue has a relatively low thermal conductivity, which means that it does not transfer heat as well as other tissues and materials?such as muscle or skin. That way, it helps to insulate an animal's body.

Materials
??? ?Two bowls
??? ?Cold water
??? ?Warm water
??? ?Ice cubes
??? ?Shortening (such as Crisco)
??? ?Paper towels
??? ?Stopwatch
??? ?Thermometer
??? ?A partner

Preparation
??? ?Put an equal number of ice cubes into each bowl without filling either bowl too full. Add cold water to each bowl.
??? ?Measure the temperature of the water in each bowl with a thermometer. They should be the same temperature. When the temperature levels off (which should happen quickly), the water is ready for the test.

Procedure
??? ?Cover your pointer finger on one hand with a thick layer of shortening, covering the entire area that will be submerged in the water. Leave your other pointer finger clean and bare.
??? ?Have your partner prepare the stopwatch. When he or she is ready, put the pointer finger of each hand into one of the bowls of ice water and have your partner start timing you. As soon as your finger feels too cold to keep it in the water any longer, take it out. How long did you leave each finger in the bowl?
??? ?Let your fingers warm up and return to their normal color. If any shortening came off of the covered finger, reapply it.
??? ?Have your partner help you pour the cold water down the sink and refill the two bowls with warm water (make sure it is warm but not hot enough to burn the skin).
??? ?Measure the temperature of the water in each bowl with a thermometer. They should be about the same. In the warm water, do you think you'll see the same result?
??? ?Have your partner time how long you can leave each finger in the bowls of warm water. How long did you leave each finger in the bowl? Was the time difference between the two fingers larger or smaller than when you put your fingers in the ice-cold water?? ?
??? ?Extra: How consistent are your results? You can repeat this activity two or three times, recording the temperature of the different waters tested and the time each finger was in the water. Then make a graph out of your results. In which environment did the shortening "adaptation" consistently give an advantage?

Libya?s former rebels seek jobs

Tripoli - Hundreds of former Libyan rebels who helped topple Muammar Gaddafi this year have started filling out applications for jobs with the new government.

Interior Minister Fawzy Abdul-Ali says it is the first step towards disarming the former rebels. They will be asked to turn in their weapons after training and working with the government.

He says former rebels will have until the end of January 2012 to apply for governments posts through local military councils distributing the applications.

On Wednesday, hundreds of former rebels in various cities began filling out the applications. They ask applicants what brigade they belong to, what their rank was during the uprising and the serial numbers of the weapons they possess.

Cassola, Rome's Jewish Christmas Treat

By Alessandra Rovati

Alessandra Rovati

A popular Italian saying advises: ?Dress like a Turk, and eat like a Jew.?

Jews have enjoyed an uninterrupted presence in Italy for more than 2,200 years, producing a delicious cuisine with almost endless regional variations, that profoundly affected broader Italian cuisine. Contrary to the all-too-common American assumption that most Jewish food is bland or boring, Jewish Italian cuisine tends to be seen as a delicacy by non-Jewish locals. Some of the most popular restaurants in Rome serve traditional Jewish dishes, like the famous fried artichokes.

Rome?s unofficial Christmas dessert, cassola, or a baked ricotta cheese cake, was originally a Jewish dish. In the 16th century, while some Jewish communities in Northern Italy made a fresh cheese baked sandwich-like dish sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon called pizza dolce, Roman Jews used ricotta to make large sweet pancakes cooked in a skillet. The dish was called ?casciola? (from ?cascio?, cheese), says Italian food historian A.Toaff in his ?Mangiare alla Giudia.?

Over time the dish transformed into a baked ricotta pancake, and was adopted by the Roman Catholic community as a traditional Christmas dessert (Roman Jews serve it on Shavuot). Coincidentally, the earliest Hanukkah levivot or latkes in Eastern Europe were made of cheese and were likely similar to Cassola.

One of the main reasons for cassola?s popularity is that it is shockingly simple to make, including only five main ingredients and no butter or oil (except for greasing the pan). What gives it its delicious creamy texture, similar to a softer, moister, more delicate cheesecake with a firmer outside, is fresh ricotta, which you can purchase from a store or try your hand at making at home. Whether you make it for the last day of Hanukkah or save it until Christmas, it is a true example of an Italian dish ? elegantly simple and delicious.

Cassola

serves 4-6

1 pound ricotta cheese (made from whole milk, without emulsifiers)
4 eggs
1 to 1 ? cup sugar (depending on desired sweetness)
a pinch of salt
zest of one large organic lemon (optional)
? teaspoon cinnamon or vanilla (optional)
1 or 2 tablespoons mild extra-virgin olive oil, or butter

1) Preheat the oven to 400? F. With a whisk or a hand mixer, beat the eggs with the sugar until creamy. Add the ricotta, salt, lemon zest and cinnamon (or vanilla).

2) Grease a 9-10 inch springform baking pan with butter or olive oil, dust with flour, pour the mixture in, and transfer into your pre-heated oven. Bake at 400 F for the first 10 minutes, then lower the temperature to 350 F and bake for another 25 minutes.

3) Turn the oven off and allow the cassola to set inside, with the door open, for another 10 or 15 minutes. It should be firmer and golden brown on the outside and very soft and moist inside, like a pudding. Serve warm.

You can also cook it in a greased non-stick or cast iron pan like a frittata, on the stovetop, flipping it once (this was probably the original version), or cook the bottom on the stovetop and the top in the oven under the broiler.

97% The Artist

All Critics (130) | Top Critics (37) | Fresh (126) | Rotten (4)

The Artist is the most surprising and delightful film of 2011.

A silent movie shot in sumptuous black-and-white, no less. A silent flick made with not a jot of distancing winking, but instead born of a heady affection for a bygone, very bygone, era of filmmaking.

It's a rocket to the moon fueled by unadulterated joy and pure imagination.

Strangely, wonderfully, The Artist feels as bold and innovative a moviegoing experience as James Cameron's bells-and-whistles Avatar did a couple of years ago.

"The Artist'' is a small, exquisitely-cut jewel in a style everyone assumes is 80 years out of date.

A beguiling tale about Hollywood's silent movie days that is itself silent, this made-in-L.A. French feature will charm cinephiles with its affection for one of the movies' golden ages.

It's easy to dismiss The Artist as a simple love letter to the silent-film era, but there is a lot more at work here than just an attention-getting gimmick.

This film says a lot, without saying nearly any words. It's one of the best of 2011. (Content Review for Parents also available)

Not only does 'The Artist' clearly demonstrate that something was lost when movies started talking, but it also proves that we haven't begun to learn what can be done with images alone.

It may be silent, but The Artist earns some very loud applause

The Artist is a slight confection, really, but it's so delicious and knowing that it may well end up on any number of cineastes' desert-island lists. It's certainly on mine.

"The Artist" may be too cute to qualify as high art, but it's highly entertaining.

The story and the silent-era conventions may not be entirely original, but the director revives this uniquely American storytelling style with such infectious joy and life-affirming enthusiasm that it's nearly impossible not to respond in equal measure.

Essentially a stunt, but an expertly executed one that's immensely enjoyable, especially for movie buffs...a nimble, exuberant lark.

'The Artist' paints a glorious picture of old Hollyood.

In the more eye-pleasing The Artist, the plot eventually comes too close to its inspiration, though its early moments were headed for mastery - and transformation - of style.

Hazanavicius crafted more than a replica of the silent era... a masterwork that likely won't be imitated. How many movies in 2011 can you say that about? Only the best one.

"The Artist" is a delightful treasure. It is a charming mixture of comedy, melodrama and romance that cinema lovers should make a point of experiencing.

This is not some clinical dissection of bygone cinematic techniques; it's a lively, appealing effort that mostly rises above mere novelty.

It's about more than the gimmick, and The Artist will be calling to you, entrancing you and making you feel the love.

This is the feel-good movie of the year and that's meant as praise, not a putdown.

No less than a gushing ode to cinema itself. Unconditional bliss.

If the concept of a contemporary, postmodern silent film sounds like a gimmick, it is, but Hazanavicius' attention to character makes certain that the film acts as more.

It's not especially deep or profound -- just (very) good old-fashioned fun.

Australia hit back against India

Brad Haddin Wicketkeeper Haddin reached 21 before the close at the MCG

Brad Haddin and Peter Siddle helped Australia recover on an even opening day of the Boxing Day Test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The pair shared an unbroken stand of 63 as the hosts closed on 277-6.

Earlier, debutant opener Ed Cowan (68) and Ricky Ponting (62) added 113 for the third wicket.

When Zaheer Khan removed Michael Clarke and Mike Hussey in successive balls, Australia slid from 205-3 to 214-6 but Haddin and Siddle steadied things.

The late intervention of the seventh-wicket pair gave Australia a parity that they will feel they deserve after two controversial moments at the MCG.

The touring Indians has refused to give consent to the use of the Decision Review System (DRS) during the four-Test series and twice the hosts suffered.

Both Cowan and Hussey were given out caught behind when they appeared to have made no contact with the ball.

For Tasmanian Cowan, who had survived the setback of seeing David Warner and Shaun Marsh fall to Umesh Yadav (3-96) in the opening session, it brought to an end the most successful display by an debuting Australian opener since Wayne Phillips' 159 against Pakistan 1983-84.

His stand with veteran Ponting, who unfurled three trademark pull shots off Zaheer and Yadav, dominated the afternoon session before Yadav tasted revenge by having the former captain caught at second slip.

The balance then swung in India's favour after tea when Zaheer (2-49) first trapped Clarke lbw and then, with the next ball, had under-pressure Hussey adjudged caught by Mahendra Dhoni when replays showed that the ball had missed the bat by some distance.

And when Cowan suffered similar misfortune off the bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin, Australia had lost three wickets for nine runs in 19 balls.

But Siddle (34 not out) and Haddin (21 not out) ensured there would be no further drama.

Steve Jobs to receive posthumous Grammy (Digital Trends)

steve jobs resigns

The Recording Academy has announced it plans to award a posthumous Trustees Award Grammy to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs to recognize his role in revolutionizing the modern music industry.

???A creative visionary, Jobs??? innovations such as the iPod and its counterpart, the online iTunes store, revolutionized the industry and how music was distributed and purchased,??

Apple was indeed a pioneer in the digital music retailing business, launching its iTunes store in 2003 with the support of all major record labels after much arm-twisting from Steve Jobs to get them all to agree to uniform pricing (then $0.99 per track), with the concession that all tracks were protected with Apple?s FairPlay DRM technology. The iTunes Store was greeted with some skepticism?after all, why buy digital tracks when CDs were often cheaper (especially for albums) and a vast library of pirated music was easily available (illegally) via peer-to-peer file sharing services? However, fueled by its iPod personal music player business, the iTunes Music Store turned into a strong success for Apple?although the store now has differential pricing, most tracks are now sold without DRM protection?another move Apple was early to embrace. As a result, Apple has long been the leading music retailer, leaving the likes of Walmart and Amazon in its wake.

Apple was also the recipient of the first Grammy ever awarded to a PC company?back in 2002 when Apple was still considered a ?PC company.? The technical Grammy was awarded for Apple?s then-nascent iTunes and iPod business, as well as for recognizing the Mac as the first computer with built-in audio capabilities?capabilities that were one chapter in the company?s long-lasting legal entanglements with the Beatles? Apple Corps.

The Recording Academy is expected to make a formal acknowledgment of Jobs? award during the Grammy Ceremony on February 14, 2012, in Los Angeles. The Grammys have always been a bit of a publicity stunt designed to boost sales and focus attention on the music industry?awarding a Grammy to Jobs personally is as much a recognition of his role in the industry as it is an effort to capitalize on the continuing accolades and memorializing of Jobs since his death in October.

The Recording Academy is granting two other Trustees Awards this year, one to longtime producer/songwriter/big-band leader Dave Bartholomew (who wrote and produced for the likes of Elvis, Chuck Berry, and Fats Domino), and world-famous recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder, who virtually defined the warm, full-textured sound associate with many high-quality jazz recordings?if you love the Blue Note jazz catalog, Ruby Van Gelder is the guy who made it happen.

Holiday travel tips for you and your furry friend | Pets Best Blog

A dog with pet insurance sits in a packed car.

By: Dr. Fiona Caldwell
Vet at Idaho Veterinary Hospital
For Pets Best Insurance

The holidays are a time for getting together with family and friends. This often includes Fido or fluffy, but travelling can be a little tricky with a furry family member. It?s always a good idea to research and invest in pet insurance well before you take off travelling with your pet. But there are some things to consider before toting your pet wherever you go, and some consideration to help make travelling less stressful for your pet and you.

When driving in the car, always ensure your pet is in a carrier that is large enough for them to stand and turn around. Never let your animals free in the car without restraint. A well behaved animal might tolerate a canine seatbelt, which is like a harness that attaches to the car?s seatbelt. A grate designed for your car, blocking off the hatchback might also be useful for larger dogs. Never leave your pet unattended in the back of a pick-up bed; always secure a carrier or use a harness that is specifically designed for pickups. This is important because just a leash tie in a pick-up can be a death sentence if your dog is able to jump or fall out, but is still attached by the collar. Because accidents can happed with even the most cautious of pet owners, it?s always a good idea to have dog insurance as a backup.

And don?t forget cats! Car travelling is possible with cats. I highly recommend placing kitty in a carrier over allowing your cat to roam free in the car. Cats can be quite vocal when riding, but will usually quiet down over time. Feline calming pheromones, such as Feliway sprays are very helpful to calm a stressed kitty. Prior to your trip, allowing your cat to acclimate to the carrier is a good idea too. Put her food and water and toys in it, and allow her to come and go and get used to the carrier

I only ever recommend sedatives for car travel if the pet is likely to hurt themselves, you or your property. The biggest reason for this is that if your pet has a reaction to a sedative while you are on the road, your access to veterinary care will be undoubtedly limited and while driving, you many not notice if there is even a problem. If your veterinarian agrees that your pet would benefit from a mild sedative or anti-anxiety medication such as xanax, discuss with your vet trying the medication prior to your trip. By ?experimenting? before you go, you can see how your pet reacts, what doses work for them, and you?ll have access to veterinary care should your pet have a reaction to it. Many pet health insurance companies, like Pets Best Insurance will even help cover a portion of medications such as these.

Pets can get motion sickness, just like people. Especially puppies, which will not uncommonly vomit during car rides. Most will out grow this, but you can try withholding a meal right before to help ease nausea (be cautious withholding meals in small breed young puppies, who need access to food often to prevent low blood sugar). Most anti-nausea medications such as Dramamine and Benadryl are safe to use in dogs, but always talk to your veterinarian regarding dosing and to ensure the dose is correct and your pet is a good candidate for this medication prior to administering any drug to your pet.

Or Call 866-929-3807 to Add a Pet to Your Current Policy

When travelling across country borders, such as Mexico and Canada by car, a veterinarian-signed official health certificate current within 10 days is required. This health certificate ensures your pet isn?t carrying any communicable diseases, is up to date on rabies vaccines and is healthy enough to be travelling. An official veterinarian signed health certificate is required for interstate travel as well.

Travelling by plane can be a little more stressful for you and your pet, but with some planning and foresight, this can go smoothly as well. It is very important to communicate with your airline carrier for details and specifics, since every airline company is different. The requirements will vary depending on whether your pet is small enough to fly with you in the cabin, or will be flying cargo.

All airlines will require a health certificate; this usually has to be current from your veterinarian within 10 days, but this timing can vary. All will require a carrier that your pet can stand and turn around in. When flying cargo, most will require that the carrier frame be bolted shut, not shut with the easy access plastic clips. Access to food and water is required as well. Many airlines won?t fly pets in extremely cold winter temperatures, so plan your flight at a time of day which will be warmer. Dog and cat insurance companies like Pets Best Insurance accept claims from any licensed vet, anywhere. So if you?re traveling in another state or country, you can visit any vet of your choice.

Most airlines will NOT allow your pet to be sedated for the trip, especially when flying cargo. The reason for this is that sedatives can compromise the pet?s ability to thermoregulate, and their ability to right themselves if they fall over.

Allow PLENTY of time if you are travelling to a foreign country or to Hawaii. Occasionally paperwork, permits and testing can take MONTHS. Do not expect to be able to get your pet into a foreign country without some significant preparation in advance. You can contact the state veterinarian, usually through the USDA for the regulations for the particular country you are travelling to. Your regular veterinarian should have access to those phone numbers and might be able to assist you.

The holidays are a joyous time and excluding those furry family members who give us the most unconditional love and kisses can be disheartening. It is easy to include your pets with a little planning, and have the whole family together for the holidays. Have a safe and wonderful holiday season!

(AP) ? Pentagon chief Leon Panetta made history Saturday as the first American defense secretary to set foot on Libyan soil and said he hoped the post-Moammar Gadhafi government could assemble the country's militias into "one Libya."

Panetta has indicated that the U.S. will give the Libyans some time to gain control of the militias that overthrew Gadhafi during an eight-month civil war before determining how to help the fledgling government.

At a news conference in the capital with Prime Minister Abd al-Raheem al-Keeb, Panetta said that he was confident that the new Libyan government is reaching out to all groups and would bring them together as part of "one Libya."

Panetta, who was joined by Gen. Carter Ham, commander of U.S. Africa Command, said the United States would provide whatever assistance the Libyans needed.

The prime minister told reporters that he was optimistic that the new government in Tripoli could deal the militias.

Panetta's route into the city took him past lush orange groves, carcasses of bombed buildings and the charred and graffiti-covered compound once occupied by Gadhafi.

Flying from rooftops were the green, black and red flags, adorned with a star and a crescent, belonging to the new government. Amid the Arabic graffiti splashed across the walls of the compound was a short comment in English: "Thanx US/UK."

Panetta also made an emotional visit to what historians believe is the gravesite of 13 U.S. sailors killed in 1804. Those deaths were caused by the explosion of the U.S.S, Intrepid, which was destroyed while slipping into the Tripoli harbor to attack pirate ships that had captured an American frigate.

Panetta walked into the small walled cemetery with more than two dozen gravestones and made his way to a corner where five large but simple white gravestones mark the graves of the American sailors. The stones read, "Here lies an American sailor who gave his life in the explosion of the United States Ship Intrepid in Tripoli Harbour, Sept. 4, 1804."

Panetta placed a wreath at the site and then observed a moment of silence. He also left behind a memento of his visit on top of one of the stones, a U.S. secretary of defense souvenir coin.

While eager to encourage a new democracy that emerged from Libya's Arab Spring revolution, the U.S. is wary of appearing as trying to exert too much influence after an eight-month civil war.

At the same time, however, leaders in the U.S. and elsewhere worry about how well the newly formed National Transitional Council can resolve clashes between militia groups in the North African nation.

Ahead of Panetta's visit, the Obama administration announced it had lifted penalties that were imposed on Libya in February to choke off Gadhafi's financial resources while his government was using violence to suppress peaceful protests.

The U.S. at the time blocked some $37 billion in Libyan assets, and a White House statement said Friday's action "unfreezes all government and central bank funds within U.S. jurisdiction, with limited exceptions."

Recovery of the assets "will allow the Libyan government to access most of its worldwide holdings and will help the new government oversee the country's transition and reconstruction in a responsible manner," the White House said.

But the continuing violence in Libya, including recent skirmishes between revolutionary fighters and national army troops near Tripoli's airport, reflects the difficulties that Libya's leaders face as they try to forge an army, integrating some of the militias and disarming the rest.

Officials acknowledge that process could take months, and that they can't force the militias to go along.

By traveling to Libya, Panetta was highlighting the different approaches that the U.S. and other countries are taking with respect to rebellions in the region against tyrannical leaders.

The U.S. and NATO provided months of military power and assistance to the Libyan rebels, but officials have made it clear they do not intend to do the same in Syria despite the furor over President Bashar Assad's crackdown on pro-reform demonstrators.

Panetta, who met with Turkish officials Friday, said they did not discuss any specific steps to increase pressure on Assad to step down.

But they talked about the need to work together with other nations to "get Assad to do the right thing."

At some point, he said, he believes that the type of uprisings that happened in Libya and elsewhere across the Middle East will take place in Syria.

Christian Bale Roughed Up In China

'Dark Knight Rises' actor barred from visiting quarantined activist.

Christian Bale intended to raise awareness about the plight of human-rights activist Chen Guangcheng — who has been under a form of house arrest since 2010 — when he invited a CNN camera crew on a trip to China.

"The Dark Knight Rises" star was there to visit the quarantined Chen when local guards rebuffed his attempt to enter the Chinese dissident's village, forcing the entire party off the premises. Chen has been under house arrest along with his family since his release from jail in September 2010. After speaking out against China's forced abortion policy, he was imprisoned in 2006 on charges of damaging property and disrupting traffic in a protest. Chen's supporters maintained that the blind, self-taught lawyer was detained on false charges, but he served the full four years of his sentence.

A CNN video captured a plainclothes guard pushing Bale around as he and the crew attempted to enter the tiny village in eastern China. Eventually, they were surrounded and corralled back to the main road. As the actor and the camera crew left the area, the guards got in a gray minivan and began to follow them.

Inside the CNN car, Bale said, "I don't feel brave doing this. The local people who stand up to authorities [and] insist on visiting Chen and his family are getting beaten up for it, and to my understanding, getting detained for it. I want to support what they're doing."

Bale first learned of Chen's plight while filming "The Flowers of War," a drama set during the Nanking Massacre. Despite pleas from U.S. officials for Chen's freedom, China's state media has given the story little coverage.

Chinese security chased Bale and CNN for more than a half hour before giving up, according to the cable news outlet. On the way back to Beijing, Bale speculated to CNN about whether he would be banned from entering the country, even as "The Flowers of War" becomes China's official entry at the 2012 Academy Awards.

"Really, what else can I do to help Chen?" he asked.

Bonds' sentencing brings BALCO saga near a close

By PAUL ELIAS

updated 3:48 p.m. ET Dec. 14, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The largest federal criminal investigation into sports doping began more than nine years ago with a tax agent digging through the trash of the now notorious Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative. Barring an appeal, the government's work comes to an anti-climactic end Friday when Barry Bonds - the probe's highest-profile catch - is sentenced for obstruction of justice.

In between, the federal government spent millions of dollars and untold staff hours obtaining the convictions of 11 people. Six of them, including track star Marion Jones, were ensnared for lying to grand jurors, federal investigators or the court. Five men, including Bonds' personal trainer Greg Anderson, pleaded guilty to steroid distribution charges stemming from their BALCO connections.

The investigation in general - and the pursuit of Bonds in particular - ignited a debate over whether the government's long involvement was the best use of public resources.

More than seven years after he testified before a grand jury investigating BALCO, Major League Baseball's all-time home runs leader was convicted on just one of four remaining counts against him. And the jury deadlocked on whether Bonds lied about taking performance enhancing drugs.

Now, federal sentencing guidelines suggest a prison term of between 15 months and 21 months. But federal probation officers are recommending that Bonds receive no time, citing his charitable work, the nature of the crime and his otherwise spotless criminal record. U.S. District Judge Susan Illston has sentenced two other BALCO figures convicted of similar crimes to probation and house arrest.

Was it all worth it?

"It absolutely was," said MacGregor Scott, the former U.S. attorney for Sacramento, now in private practice at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe. "It brought a focus and awareness to the steroids issue that wasn't there before."

Scott said prosecutors had to go after Bonds once they concluded he lied to the grand jury when he denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs and said he allowed only doctors to inject him. Dozens of other athletes testified truthfully, Scott said.

"There aren't two sets of laws, one for Bonds and one for everybody else," Scott said. "The grand jury is the bedrock of the criminal justice system in the United States."

The probe did lead directly to former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell's in-depth investigation of drug use in Major League Baseball and his seminal Mitchell Report, which in turn prompted MLB and its players' union to strengthen their steroids policy.

Yet the relatively short list of convictions leaves some, perhaps most notably the BALCO founder himself, unimpressed.

"Obviously, the BALCO case brought about a greater public awareness regarding the rampant use of drugs at the elite level of sport, which is a good thing," said Victor Conte, the BALCO founder and president - who spent four months in prison after pleading guilty to steroids distribution. "As the BALCO case comes to a close, I don't think it was the highest and best use of the tens of millions of taxpayer dollars that were spent on the case."

Bonds will have 14 days after his sentencing to file a notice of appeal.

The trial itself ended ambiguously in April about three weeks after it began.

The jury concluded Bonds purposely evaded responding during testimony to a grand jury investigating steroids distribution in sports with a rambling non sequitur to a question about drug injections, and the jurors convicted him of obstruction of justice. But they couldn't reach a unanimous agreement on the heart of the case, deadlocking on three charges alleging Bonds lied to the grand jury when he denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs and testifying that no one other than his doctors ever injected him.

Prosecutors in September dropped those charges, foregoing another trial and declaring the one conviction showed the value of the Bonds prosecution.

The government's lead investigator, Jeff Novitzky, said Bonds first came to his attention during his weekly Monday night raids of BALCO's trash during the summer and fall of 2002. Novitzky, who was with the Internal Revenue Service then and is now a Food and Drug Administration investigator, said he found a magazine article quoting Bonds as crediting BALCO with helping him pump up and increase his power.

Novitzky gathered more evidence connecting Bonds to BALCO during September 2003 raids of the lab and the home of Greg Anderson, Bonds' personal trainer at the time. Three months later, Bonds was called before the grand jury and granted immunity from prosecution so long as he testified truthfully.

Despite the jury's mixed verdict, prosecutors still insist Bonds lied.

"The evidence at trial demonstrated that Bonds went into the grand jury with the intention of providing false statements and obstructing the grand jury's efforts to get to the truth in the BALCO matter," prosecutors wrote the judge last week seeking a prison sentence of 15 months for the former San Francisco Giants slugger. "Without truthful testimony, the judicial system simply cannot function properly in its mission-to get to justice."

In recommending that Bonds serve a term of house arrest, probation and community service - but no prison time - the federal probation department called Bonds' conviction an "aberration" and cited his "significant history of charitable, civic and prior good works" as reasons for the judge to "downward depart" from federal guidelines.

The department's report is confidential, but was cited in part by Bonds' lawyers last week in arguing for probation and volunteer work. Earlier this year, Bonds announced he would pay for the college education of the two children of Bryan Stow, the Giants fan who remains hospitalized after the highly publicized opening day beating in the parking lot of Dodger Stadium.

Bonds' lawyers quote an unidentified nurse writing in a letter to Illston that Bonds often visits sick children at the University of California, San Francisco's Benioff Children's Hospital. He paid for the 2009 renovation of what is now the Barry Bonds Family Foundation Playroom, which he visited in June.

"Barry Bonds is a hero to us at the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital," the nurse wrote. "I consider being a character witness for Barry Bonds a privilege."

Nasa develops space comet harpoon

Nasa animation of how the space harpoon works

Nasa is developing a harpoon capable of taking samples from comets.

The space agency has already built a prototype capable of launching test harpoon tips across a distance of a mile (1.6km).

The engineers believe it would be safer to collect comet material using the equipment rather than trying to land on the celestial bodies.

Nasa said that the samples could reveal the origins of the planets and how life was created on Earth.

Comets are made up of frozen chunks of ice, gas and dust. They orbit the sun and, if they are close enough to the star, project a tail in the opposite direction made up of ionised gases.

Particle samples recovered by Nasa's Stardust mission in 2002 were found to include an amino acid, glycine, which is used by living organisms to create proteins. The agency said the discovery supported the theory that some of life's ingredients had formed in space and had been delivered to Earth by meteorite and comet impacts.

Big springs

To gather more material, the agency is developing a sample-collecting space harpoon which could be projected "with surgical precision" from a spacecraft hovering above the target.

Experts said this would avoid the risk of trying to anchor the craft to a comet's rugged surface.

Comets are much smaller than planets and have much lower gravity as a consequence, so a landed spacecraft would have to find some way of attaching itself to the object to avoid floating off.

Engineers at Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, have built a trial harpoon that is 6ft (183cm) tall.

The bow is made out of a pair of springs normally used to provide the suspension for trucks. The bow string is made out of steel cable half an inch thick.

It can fire projectiles at speeds of more than 100ft per second. Test projectiles are fired into large drums filled with sand, rock salt, ice or pebbles.

"We had to bolt it to the floor, because the recoil made the whole testbed jump after every shot," said the project's lead engineer, Donald Wegel.

"We're not sure what we'll encounter on the comet - the surface could be soft and fluffy, mostly made up of dust, or it could be ice mixed with pebbles, or even solid rock.

"Most likely, there will be areas with different compositions, so we need to design a harpoon that's capable of penetrating a reasonable range of materials."

Hollow tip

Data collected from the experiments will be used to determine which design and explosive powder charge should be used on the mission.

The scientists are also developing a hollow harpoon tip to contain a sample chamber in which the gathered material would be stored.

"It has to remain reliably open as the tip penetrates the comet's surface, but then has to close tightly and detach from the tip so the sample can be pulled back into the spacecraft," said Mr Wegel.

The team added that it expected several harpoons with different powder charges would be put on the spacecraft to ensure materials could be recovered from different parts of the same comet.

Comet collision

The researchers said the work could also help discover the best way to destroy comets.

Science-fiction stories have described using nuclear weapons to change the direction of comets set on collision course with Earth.

However, Nasa warned the idea could backfire if the explosion only shattered the object into smaller, but still deadly, fragments.

Mr Wegel suggested that if scientists could gather material from the comet, they might be able to work out its composition and thus be able to work out how to deflect it.

Rosetta mission

Nasa is not the only space agency to have the idea of using a space harpoon.

The European Space Agency's Rosetta mission, launched in 2004, plans to use one. It is set to rendezvous with a comet named Churyumov-Gerasimenko by October 2014.

It will use the harpoon to anchor a lander to the ground. The lander contains equipment to analyse the comet's surface and subsurface.

Mr Wegel described the ESA's harpoon as "ingenious", but noted that it could not collect samples of its own.
