What does it take to get a graduate job in equity research at Goldman Sachs? We?ve already looked at what equity research at Goldman Sachs involves, but if you want to know about succeeding in the recruitment process, Katherine Chan, a third year economics student at York University (with a graduate offer of an equity research job in Goldman?s asset management arm), has offered her extensive insights?to York University?s student publication.?

This is Katherine?s advice (summarised), and what we?ve gleaned from her account of getting into Goldman:

1. ? Be persistent, start young

Initially, Katherine thought she wanted to go into law. When she realised she didn?t, she decided to investigate her interest in banking. While she was at sixth form college, a teacher recommended she go for an insight day at Goldman. That was enough to ignite her enthusiasm:? ?everything else was simply a step [to getting there],? she says.

2. ?If you have a pre-university gap year, spend it in a big brand name ? even you apply for an admin role

Katherine?s gap year was in the Bank of England during the financial crisis. She applied for a role as a secretary but ended up taking on far more responsibility.

?[My placement] was in 2008 when the financial crisis happened? Because of that I took on a lot more responsibility and by the end of the year I was doing data analysis which was really interesting.?

3. ? Don?t be put off by rejection

When Katherine applied for spring weeks (first year internships at banks), she was rejected. This didn?t deter her.

4. Do some volunteering

?I volunteered at Christians Against Poverty and they?re a national debt counselling charity, so it?s a different side of finance. In first year I did that on a weekly basis and I also spent a month working in their head office in Bradford.?

5. ? Apply for a lot of internships

Katherine applied for 15. She only heard back from one: Goldman Sachs.

6. ? Don?t expect a numeracy test if you apply to Goldman. Do expect a big emphasis on fit

The graduate application process had three stages: an online application, two interviews, but no numeracy test.

The first interview was, ?more of a chat I found, [with] them trying to see if I?d fit in with their culture.?

7. ?Don?t expect bizarre questions

Katherine said there weren?t any trick questions: it was more about testing how she arrived at an answer to a standard question.

8. ?Do expect a combination of ad hoc projects and a long term project during the internship

?My long term project was ?What are the opportunities for consumer staples in Africa??? said Katherine. ?So consumer stocks are items like shampoo and Africa is potentially the next big demographic of people who will be able to buy shampoo, packaged food, and beer, so I was looking at when is Africa going to be big and rich enough to afford these products??

9. ?Do expect speed-dating style networking dinners

Goldman Sachs? intern networking events apparently include a dinner set up like speed dating event, with a different course at each table.

10. ?Do expect to be actively assessed against other interns

There was an intern debate halfway through the internship and Katherine was also asked to make a stock pitch presentation to the research directors at the end of the summer.

11. Do expect to work very hard. Try to be enthusiastic and pleasant

Katherine arrived daily at 6.45am and finished around 7.30pm.

She attributes her success to hard work, passion about her Africa project, and to being a good team member.

12. Don?t expect to receive an offer immediately

Katherine had to wait until two weeks after the internship until her offer from Goldman Sachs came through.

This week marks the anniversary of the largest earthquake ever recorded ? a magnitude-9.5 earthquake that ripped along the coast of southern Chile on May 22, 1960.

The colossal quake and the powerful tsunami that followed killed more than 1,400 people and left 2 million homeless in Chile. And its devastation reached far beyond South America.

The tsunami swept across the Pacific Ocean, wreaking havoc in Hawaii, the Philippines and Japan; a day after the earthquake, walls of water up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) high rushed ashore at Honshu, Japan's main island, destroying 1,600 homes and killing 138 people.

The colossal quake was what is known as a megathrust earthquake. These giant quakes, the most powerful quakes the planet is capable of unleashing, occur along subduction zones, where one tectonic plate dives beneath another. [The 10 Biggest Earthquakes in History]

In this case, the quake was caused when a 620-mile-long (1,000 kilometers) stretch of the Nazca plate, an oceanic plate that forms a large swath of the Pacific Ocean floor, lurched deeper beneath the South American plate, producing the only 9.5-magnitude quake on record.

Magnitude measures
Although figuring out an earthquake's power requires lots of complicated math and lots of data, magnitude boils down to three basic factors: area, distance and friction.

"It's about the physical properties of the fault," said Paul Earle, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

Me and my mom are slightly allergic to some types of dogs. In our house, we have a bichon (which we are both perfectly fine with), a chihuahua mix (a few little issues, but nothing too bad), and we recently took in a pomeranian.

My concern is with the pomeranian, as they shed more than the chihuahua or bichon.

My family loves dogs, and we?d hate to have to force the pomeranian to another home again (it?s from the Almost Home foundation, so it?s been bouncing from house to house for a while now), but is there any health dangers down the road for me or my mom if we keep him?

The illuminated cable is quite simple to use -- with no buttons or switches to fuss with, the connector lights up when you touch the aluminum plates, and powers off the moment it's secured to your device. There's really not much else to it -- CordLite functions identically to an Apple-manufactured cable, though the dock connector itself is significant larger than the OEM variety, at least in its current prototype form.

The design team has turned to Kickstarter to get their project funded, with a $70,000 goal. If all goes to plan, they expect to ship black or white CordLites beginning in September at $35 a pop, but as always, getting in during the "pre-order" phase will net you a hefty discount. The first 200 backers can get an early-bird cord in the color of their choice with a $25 pledge, with the required amount jumping up to $30 from there. A $45 pledge gets you an exclusive laser-etched model, while $50 will be met with a pair of early-bird cords. As you may have gathered from the picture above, the first version will only function with Apple devices, though a microUSB cord is also said to be in the works. Facebook sets price at $38 a share for IPO

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is selling about $1 billion worth of shares and will be left with a stake valued at $19 billion.

Updated at 4:30 p.m. ET: Facebook went public Thursday at $38 a share, raising $16 billion in a landmark initial public offering that values the company at more than $100 billion.

Investment banks organizing the?stock offering set the price at the top end of the range of $34 to $38 per share estimated by Facebook in a regulatory filing earlier this week. Shares of Facebook are expected to begin trading publicly on the Nasdaq stock market Friday at 11 a.m. ET under the symbol "FB."

At $38 a share, the offering values the eight-year-old company at $104 billion, making its IPO the largest-ever stock market debut for an Internet company. It will raise more than?$16 billion for Facebook and selling shareholders, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and ultimately could raise up to?$18.4 billion, assuming underwriters exercise their option for "overallotments" to meet strong demand.

The IPO will leave Zuckerberg in control of the company, with more than 50 percent of the voting shares, and make him fabulously wealthy in the process, with a stake valued at some $19 billion.

Other?early investors in Facebook also will make a killing.

For example, Peter Thiel, the venture capitalist who sits on Facebook?s board of directors, invested $500,000 in the company back in 2004. He?s selling nearly 17 million of his shares in the IPO, which means he'll get some $640 million.

The sky-high valuation of Facebook puts it a bit ahead of Web veteran Amazon.com, which has more than 10 times Facebook's $3.7 billion in revenue. But Facebook is growing quickly and posted $1 billion in profits last year, more than Amazon's $631 million.

For individual investors, who will get their chance when Facebook begins trading Friday, investing in the company could be a risky bet, said Jay Ritter, an IPO expert and Cordell Professor of Finance at the?University of Florida.

?My concern with Facebook is that at the valuation that public market investors are going to be buying in at there?s very little upside potential left,? he told CNBC.

But, he added, it doesn?t necessarily follow that Facebook is overvalued.

?The bullish case for Facebook is, as Google has demonstrated, targeted search can be an extremely profitable business, and Facebook has that franchise with social networks and it?s a very defensible business model,? Ritter said.

In a regulatory filing issued Wednesday, Facebook said it expects to sell as many as 421.2 million shares,?up from a previous maximum of 337.4 million. The company is selling 180 million shares, raising an estimated $6.8 billion for general business use. The rest of the shares are being sold by early investors and company insiders who are cashing out.

An additional 63.2 million shares?could be sold to cover the overallotments.?

Is Russia now the strongest backer of peace in Syria?

Russia has emerged as a strong backer of Kofi Annan's peace plan for Syria, and is now hammering Western nations for not doing enough to support it.

Russia today challenged Western countries to get behind United Nations envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan for Syria, or accept the blame for its failure.

It's a new role for Russia, which endured months of accusations that it was blocking a solution for strife-torn Syria after it vetoed two UN Security Council?resolutions in the past several months?calling for the removal of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.? ?

But last month, Moscow threw its weight behind Mr. Annan's plan to end the year-long uprising, which has killed more than 9,000 people by UN estimates. It called for a withdrawal of all government forces from Syrian towns and cities, followed by a shaky cease-fire that went into effect last Thursday and appears to be just barely holding despite multiple violations alleged on both sides.

Speaking in televised remarks today, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov implied that the shoe is on the other foot now, with Moscow strongly backing the UN peace plan for Syria and willing to hold both Mr. Assad and his opponents to task but, he alleged, the effort is being undermined by unnamed Western and Arab countries.

"There are those who want Kofi Annan's plan to fail," Mr. Lavrov insisted. "Today, those who from the beginning foretold the failure of Annan's plan are doing a lot to see to it that this prophecy comes true? They are doing this by delivering arms to the Syrian opposition and stimulating the activity of rebels who continue to attack both government facilities and civilian facilities on a daily basis."

The cease-fire remains "quite fragile" because of the reluctance of those outside forces to fully back the Annan plan, Lavrov suggested, although he added that Assad bears a share of blame for the continuing uncertainty. "Of course, government forces are also taking measures to react to such provocations, and as a result it is not all going very smoothly yet," he said.

Italy goes big to save Venice as it sinks into the sea

A multibillion-dollar flood-prevention system will be put in place starting next year, a decade after the project began.

Venetians have been coping with tidal flooding, or ?acqua alta,? for centuries. A recent study suggests the problem may be worsening faster than previously believed.

But a multibillion-dollar system to be implemented starting next year could help prevent major flooding, according to two engineers who presented the project yesterday at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Mass.

According to scientists from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, the University of Miami, and Tele-Rilevamento Europa, an Italian company specializing in ground deformation measurement, the lagoon city is sinking, and won?t stop any time soon.

The team, who published their findings in the March issue of Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, a journal of the American Geophysical Union, combined GPS and space-borne radar information on the lagoon over the past 10 years and came to the conclusion that the city is sinking about two millimeters (0.08 inches) per year. This contradicts previous studies, according to which Venice?s land subsidence, the scientific term that refers to its slow sinking into the waters, had stopped after the city discontinued groundwater pumping in the 1990s, as reported by the Italian newspaper Il Gazzettino.

?It?s a small effect, but it?s important,? lead author Yehuda Bock said in a press release.

In 20 years, the study says, 80 millimeters (3.2 inches) of the lagoon will be taken over by the sea. But that is not the only thing Venetians should be worried about: The city is also tilting eastward, a problem the authors of the research say wasn?t detected in other studies.

So, is Venice doomed? ?Perhaps not. First of all, some question the study?s methodological approach. Pierpaolo Campostrini, director of Corila, a Venice-based research center that studies the lagoon, told Italian daily Corriere della Sera that subsidence may not be constant. ?It could accelerate or slow down,? he said.

Then there is Mose, a complex 5 billion euro ($6.5 billion) flood-prevention system part of which will be operational in 2013 ? 10 years after the project, one of Italy's largest public works, first began. Mose engineers Maria Teresa Brotto and Giovanni Cecconi were at MIT yesterday to present the project, which MIT faculty helped to develop. Mose?s four barriers, placed in the water at the lagoon?s inlets, are designed to rise with the water level, thus protecting the lagoon from flooding.

The goal, Mr. Cecconi said, is ?to keep the water level under 100 centimeters [3.28 feet]? in the city. Critics of the project, however, are concerned about its environmental impact and its maintenance costs, which Ms. Brotto said will amount to 15 to 20 million euros per year.
