Big Neuroscience: Billions and Billions (Maybe) to Unravel Mysteries of the Brain

The Human Brain Project intends to create a computer simulation at scales ranging from the nano to the macro.

The era of Big Neuroscience has arrived.

In late January, The Human Brain Project?an attempt to create a computer simulation of the brain at every scale from the nano nano to the macro biotic?announced that it had successfully arranged a billion Euro funding package for a 10-year run.

And then on Feb. 18, an article in The New York Times took the wraps off a plan to spend perhaps billions of dollars for an effort to record large collections of brain cells and figure out what exactly they are doing.

Is this the Large Hadron Collider vs. the Superconducting Supercollider redux?

Not yet. The billions for the Brain Activity Map, the U.S. project, are still a wish that has yet to be granted.

But, despite as-always hazy government finances, brain researchers are thinking large as they never have before, and invoking the attendant rhetoric of? moon shots, next-generation Human Genome Projects and the need for humankind to muster the requisite visionary zeal to tackle one of science?s ?last frontiers.? Oy, spare me that last part.

The challenges these projects have set for themselves, though, illustrate the challenge of? going from today?s crude profiles of? a biological machine of incomprehensible complexity to an accurate rendering of the goings-on of some 100 billion neurons woven together by a pulsating tapestry of 100 trillion electrical interconnections.

Henry Markram of ?cole Polytechnique F?d?rale de Lausanne described the goals for the Human Brain Project in Scientific American in June, saying that the project would become the ?most powerful flight simulator ever built. Rather than simulating ?thermal runaway? in a Boeing 787, it is intended to? furnish a big-screen blowup of every cell and connection inside the human skull.

The Human Brain Project continues to receive brickbats from a number of quarters. The researchers? plan to take the most current knowledge of brain anatomy and function to create an elaborate computer simulation. The? pitfall has to do with the simple fact that what we know at the molecular, cellular, circuit levels and up is often inadequate or just plain wrong. Layering faulty assumption upon faulty assumption can produce an elaborate? software fantasy world. But, as Markram hastens to emphasize, software can always be revised for a next release to fold in the latest from experiments in cells, fruit flies, roundworms, mice, monkeys and people.? The hurdles are still enormous. When we ran this article last year, it was accompanied by a Web-based excerpt from? a section of a chapter of Connectome, a book by neuroscientist Sebastian Seung, that described the difficulties involved in reducing the brain to a piece of software.? What happens, for instance, if a neurotransmitter like dopamine escapes from the immediate connection point, a synapse, and interacts with a synapse at some distance. How does this magisterial brain model take into account this possibility?

By contrast, the Brain Activity Map, in its still nascent conception, has plans for something less ambitious than a brain in a box. It intends, from what can be gleaned, to provide a record of everything that happens along a neural circuit. It would function not? just as a static model of the connections between, say,? the frontal lobe of the brain to? the emotion-processing amygdala. Rather it would be a dynamic rendition of what goes on along that pathway, a record of even the most minute voltage fluctuations along the intricate links of this circuit.

John Donoghue of Brown University, a researcher in brain-machine interfaces, and one of the scientists involved in planning the Brain Activity Map, noted that probes exist today to capture what happens at the cellular and molecular level and that brain imaging machines can take in what happens over gross areas of neural anatomy. Missing, however, is the technology to monitor in real time what happens when hundreds to millions of neurons coordinate their firing patterns, a circuit-level view of brain activity from which aspects of conscious function emerge?seeing a dog, hearing a song, feeling happy or sad. ?We don?t have the tools to study large numbers of neurons at high temporal resolution over large areas of the brain,? Donoghue says. ?We need tools to do that. Once we have the tools, we can do the experiments and that can drive theory about what goes wrong in schizophrenia or depression.?

Even if the Brain Activity Map doesn?t meet its most ambitious goals, it might still be deemed a success because it could produce? tools that could sense and stimulate individual neurons at the scale of nanometers?one speculative proposal would even use an artificial DNA sensor that would detect electrical activity in a brain circuit?a sort of DNA ticker tape

The tangled complexity of the brain?s wiring may make any Big Neuroscience effort a bigger hurdle to overcome than decoding the sequence of nucleotides, the A, C, G, Ts that make up the human genome. A documentary released recently? The Singularity?explores the idea that computing and other technology is advancing so rapidly?that machines will soon be smarter than humans and humans will be achieve immortality by making a copy of their neural circuits and transferring them to a robot or computer. The documentary interviews a number of prominent neuroscientists about the prospects for The Singularity becoming a reality. In it, neuroscientist Christof Koch mentions that the? wiring diagram of the nervous systems of the roundworm, Caenorhabditis elegans, has been known for decades and neuroscientists are still attempting to unravel its basic functioning.

Michael Gazzaniga, another prominent brain researcher, endorsed the idea of proceeding with the Brain Activity Map as long as other critical brain research does not suffer. But he added that a realistic perspective is required on how long it will take to achieve the ambitious goals that were widely discussed in the popular press in recent days. ?I say go with a new approach while keeping the best of the old,? he says. ?It will take dozens of years to figure this all out.?

Falcon Pro Hits 100k Twitter Token Limit; Here?s How You Can Help Save the Best Twitter App!

Falcon-Pro

How many of you out there use Falcon Pro for Twitter? Probably quite a few of you. It?s a very popular app, and some even call it the best Twitter app for Android. But that?s not keeping Twitter from enforcing their new API rules. Twitter has a new API, and one of the rules is that each app has 100,000 tokens. One token is used for each user. Once that 100,000 user limit is reached, no one else can connect to the app or use it. Which really sucks. But there is a temporary solution.

For those of you not using Falcon Pro, please login to your Twitter account at Twitter.com and go to the apps section under settings and select ?revoke access? for Falcon Pro and any other apps you aren?t using anymore. That will free up your token so someone else can use it. Yeah its not the best way to go about it, but it?s better than nothing.

Revoke-Falcon-Pro

These new API rules have become a huge hassle for developers. In factit cost Chris Lacy to stop developing Tweet Lanes quite some time ago. This new 100k token rule is really going to discourage developers from developing for Twitter. But what Twitter has failed to realize is that apps is what made Twitter what it is today. Without all these awesome apps, they wouldn?t be as popular as they actually are. Here?s what Falcon Pro?s developer Joaquim Verg?s had to say about this fiasco:

Joaquim-Verg?s-joenrv-on-Twitter-e1361619203259

He?s not going down without swinging either. Joaquim has created a petition to get Twitter to lift this rule or in the least bit raise the token limit. He also told us that there are only 40,000 active installs of Falcon Pro. Meaning around 60,000 users pirated the app. Which is pretty unfortunate. It?s ?kinda sad that people would pirate a developers hard work when he?s only asking for $2. But hey you can sign the petition, and hopefully Twitter will raise the token limit.

How many of you use Falcon Pro as your main Twitter app? Let us know in the comments below.

John Lackey on his spring debut: ?I missed playing baseball?

A relaxed and happy John Lackey after Saturday's spring debut. (Mike Petraglia/WEEI.com)

FORT MYERS, Fla. ? John Lackey is a changed man.

After allowing one run on one hit, one strikeout, one walk and one hit batter in his spring debut Saturday, the 34-year-old right-hander admitted to being his age, laughed about his 20-pitch outing and expressed appreciation for feeling no pain in his elbow for the first time since signing with the Red Sox before the 2010 season.

?I?ve lied, for sure, about that,? Lackey said when asked if he hid arm pain from the Red Sox in the first three seasons with the team. ?There?s definitely some pain. There were a few times when I said there wasn?t but it?s been a few years, for sure.?

Despite loading the bases with none out on the first 10 pitches he threw, he was enjoying the experience all the while on the JetBlue mound.

?I did,? he said. ?I kind of took a second before I went out on the mound and reflected on the bench on the past year and a half. It?s been a lot of work and have to thank a lot of trainers, a lot of people that helped me get back to this point. I was excited to be back out there.

?[I was] excited. It was fun. I missed playing baseball for sure. It was good to be back out there. The arm felt fine. I didn?t feel any pain in the elbow. Just keep moving forward.?

Lackey allowed one run, one hit, one walk, struck out a batter and hit a batter in a 20-pitch first inning of work, his only inning of the day.

?Results stuff I really wasn?t real concerned about today,? he said. ?Just glad to be back out there and get things going in that direction. Next time out we?ll get to working on a few other things.?

What did his manager think?

?The ball got out of his hand as we expected today,? John Farrell said. ?It?s a big step, and it?s one over the last 16 months, he was on his program, and at times, he probably felt like he was the only one going through it. And today was the first step for his building block for spring training and getting back to being a regular member of this rotation.

?I think there was a lot of anticipation on a number of people?s part, and mostly John?s. But now, he?s able to get into his five-day rotation, normal sides, normal turns through the schedule. But a good first step for him.?

Farrell said the plan is to increase to two innings for his next outing, likely in five days against the Pirates in Bradenton, and increase by one inning in each subsequent start.

?That?s the plan,? Farrell said. ?He?ll build with each consecutive outing, an inning at a time.?

Lackey admitted he had some nerves taking the mound.

?There?s definitely some for sure,? Lackey said. ?It got better as I got a little bit more tired. The ball started coming down a little bit but first couple of hitters, I was up in the zone. I was just going to throw all fastballs today just trying to build arm strength. I think I tried one changeup, that?s it. The rest of them were all fastballs. It?s a little different than throwing on the side for sure.?

Lackey said he wasn?t worried about velocity in the first game of the spring, a game in which he threw no breaking balls.

?The first game after Tommy John? No. I was just trying to hit the glove in the air today. The plan was one inning all along. I look forward to the next time for sure,? Lackey said.

Boeing proposes full 787 battery fix to FAA

Boeing gave U.S. aviation regulators its plan to fix the volatile battery aboard its new 787 Dreamliner on Friday, even before investigators know what caused the batteries to overheat on two planes last month.

Boeing will not propose abandoning the lithium-ion batteries, however, and is not working on a backup or longer-term fix for the problem that has grounded its entire fleet of 50 787 Dreamliners, three sources familiar with the plan said.

The proposal, made to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, includes specific measures aimed at addressing possible causes of short-circuits that prompted one of the lithium-ion batteries on board a 787 to catch fire at a Boston airport in January, the sources said. A second battery smoldered during a flight in Japan a few days later, leading to an emergency landing and evacuation.

The proposal includes insulation between the cells of the battery and a stronger, stainless steel box with a venting tube to contain a fire and expel fumes outside the aircraft should a battery catch fire again, the sources said.

"I have talked to a number of people who are working directly on these batteries. No one is on the Plan-B team," said a person familiar with Boeing's efforts who was not authorized to speak publicly about them.

Boeing's proposal to the FAA is not a temporary "band-aid" that would be supplanted by another solution later, said a second source, who also was not authorized to speak publicly.

The FAA said in a statement Friday that it is reviewing Boeing's proposal. "The safety of the flying public is our top priority and we won?t allow the 787 to return to commercial service until we?re confident that any proposed solution has addressed the battery failure risks," the statement said.

Boeing declined to comment specifically on its proposal, and reiterated that hundreds of engineers and technical experts are working "around the clock" to return the 787 fleet to service. "Everyone is working to get to the answer as quickly as possible and good progress is being made," spokesman Marc Birtel said.

Five weeks after U.S. authorities grounded the worldwide fleet of 787s, U.S., Japanese and French investigators are still not certain what caused the battery fire aboard an All Nippon Airways 787 in Boston and an overheated, smoking battery on a Japan Airlines 787 in Japan.

The National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating the Boston fire and the Japan Transportation Safety Board is investigating the battery failure in Japan. Neither have found a root cause for the problems.

The sources said it is possible the NTSB might never determine the root cause.

SpiderSense suit lets you know when danger is near

Know that feeling when someone wanders too far into your personal space? The University of Illinois' Victor Mateevitsi does, which is why he'd built a suit that does the job to a far greater degree of accuracy. SpiderSense is a onesie that uses a series of microphones to rend and receive ultrasonic signals from the space around you, like high frequency radar. When the outfit senses something approaching, a robotic arm corresponding to the microphone exerts pressure on your skin, pointing you in the direction of the danger. Mateevitsi tested the gear by blindfolding researchers and asking them to throw a cardboard ninja star whenever (and wherever) they sensed a threat -- with positive results 95 percent of the time. SpiderSense will get its first public showing at Stuttgart's Augmented Human conference in March and it's hoped that the hardware will eventually help Blind people get around easier.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) ? A false report of a gunman at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that briefly caused a campus-wide lockdown Saturday stemmed from an electronic message sent to police, authorities said.

Officers searched for a man reported to be carrying a long rifle and wearing body armor but found nothing unusual, Cambridge police said. The report ? that alleged the gunman was barricaded inside a building on campus ? turned out to be a hoax, and there was no threat to public safety, state police spokesman David Procopio said.

Cambridge police received the tip in an electronic message around 7:30 a.m., but witnesses on the scene eventually contradicted it, spokesman Dan Riviello said. Neither police nor MIT specified how the tip was received, though the police department's website says anonymous tips may be made via text message or email, in addition to a telephone hotline.

"The MIT community was sent a precautionary text message at 8:52 a.m. asking them to remain indoors and shelter in place," the university said in a statement issued following online criticism over the delay in alerting the public that a gunman was possibly on campus. It did not explain why it took more than an hour to issue the alert.

A room-to-room search by MIT and Cambridge police, along with state police troopers, led officers to declare that the scene was clear at about 10:30 a.m., MIT said.

"No armed suspects were found in the building or on campus and police believe that the event, as reported, did not occur," according to a statement by Cambridge police.

Investigators are trying to identify the prankster and will pursue criminal charges if they do, Riviello said.

He declined to provide additional details or confirm reports that the IP address used by the prankster has been traced to New York, saying the investigation continued.

John DiFava, chief of MIT's campus police, acknowledged the delay in telling students about a possible gunman on campus. "I have to look into it and find out the reason for the lag," he told the Boston Globe.

Junior Zach Wener-Fligner told the newspaper that the delay was "a little worrisome."

"But I assume the relevant area was locked down," he said.

About 11,000 people attend the prestigious school outside Boston where students are famous for their smarts as well as their stunts, including once putting a police car on top of a domed campus building.

WATCH: Gay Couple Turned Away By Wedding Venue 'Because Of God'

A Texas-based gay couple is crying foul after they say they were turned down by a reception venue who refused to host their forthcoming wedding.

As WFAA News 8 reports, Ben Allen and Justin Hudgins hoped to book a reception for 150 guests at the All Occasion Party Place near Fort Worth. But the couple says they were told by phone and email that the venue wouldn't host a same-sex wedding.

?It is because of God that I will not be a part in your reception, and I know he loves you, but not what you are doing,? All Occasion Party Place employee Robin Hearne is quoted by the news channel as having written to Hudgins in an e-mail. ?I simply said I can not rent to you which is also my right.?

The couple, who will tie the knot in Mexico on April 6, say they were "floored" by the encounter.

"It almost felt like a sucker-punch to the face," Allen told NBCNFW. "I thought, in today's day and age, for someone to deny you simply because you date someone of the same sex, it doesn't really make sense to me."

As NBCNFW points out, the All Occasion Party Place is located outside the Fort Worth city limits, and therefore doesn't fall under the city's anti-discrimination code. Still, the case has nonetheless sparked the ire of local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights advocates.

Notes Chuck Smith of Equality Texas, "Refusing to provide services or public accommodations to anyone solely because of their sexual orientation or gender identity is wrong."

Allen and Hudgins' case follows that of an Oregon-based lesbian couple, who were turned away by a local bakery after they sought a wedding cake.

"I apologized for wasting their time and said we don?t do same-sex marriages,? Sweet Cakes by Melissa owner Aaron Klein is quoted by KATU as saying. ?I honestly did not mean to hurt anybody, didn?t mean to make anybody upset, [it?s] just something I believe in very strongly.?

In October 2012, a New York-based lesbian couple were similarly turned away by a rural farm where they hoped to tie the knot.

Robert Gifford, who owns Liberty Ridge Farm with his wife Cynthia, confirmed the news, telling WNYT: "I think it's our right to choose who we market to, like any business...we are a family business, and we just feel we ought to stay down the family path."

Boeing proposing long-term fix for 787 batteries

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Boeing is proposing a long-term fix for the 787 Dreamliner's troubled batteries that will keep them grounded until April at the earliest, congressional officials said Friday.

A Boeing Commercial Airplanes team led by CEO Ray Conner was scheduled to present the plan in a meeting Friday with Michael Huerta, head of the Federal Aviation Administration. The airliners, Boeing's newest and most technologically advanced, have not been allowed to fly since mid-January following a battery fire in one plane and a smoking battery in another.

The plan calls for revamping the aircraft's two kinds of lithium ion batteries to ensure that any short-circuiting that could lead to a fire won't spread from one battery cell to the others, officials said. That would be achieved by placing more robust ceramic insulation between each of the battery's eight cells. The aim is to contain not only the short-circuiting, but any thermal runaway, a chemical reaction that leads to progressively hotter temperatures.

The additional spacers will enlarge the battery, requiring a bigger battery box to hold the eight cells. That new box would also be more robust, with greater insulation along its sides to prevent any fire from escaping, officials said.

The plan will require testing and partially recertifying the safety of the plane's batteries, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly.

The testing and recertification will take time, with engineers currently estimating completion sometime in April, they said.

It's up to Huerta to decide whether to approve the plan. But Boeing's plan is not a surprise, since the company has kept regulators closely informed, the officials said.

Boeing, the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board still have not identified the root cause of a Jan. 7 fire that erupted in an auxiliary power unit battery of a Japan Airlines 787 about a half hour after the plane landed at Boston's Logan International Airport. The safety board is investigating that incident.

Engineers and battery experts gathered by Boeing developed a list of possible causes for the fire and a plan to modify the batteries to address the spread of a fire created by any of those causes, officials said.

After the Jan. 7 fire and an emergency landing by an All Nippon Airways 787 in Japan, the FAA and aviation authorities overseas ordered the planes grounded. There are a total of 50 of the planes in the fleets of seven airlines in six countries.

On Thursday, United Airlines cut its six 787s from its flying plans at least until June and postponed its new Denver-to-Tokyo flights as airlines continued to tear up their schedules while the plane is out of service. United is the only U.S. carrier with 787s in its fleet.

Among the many unanswered questions is how the 787 battery problems will affect Boeing's effort to win FAA permission for the planes to make flights that venture further from the nearest airport, such as those that travel over wide expanses of ocean. The FAA has tighter requirements for such flights in twin-engine planes because it wants to make sure the plane can keep flying if it loses an engine or encounters other problems far away from a safe landing.

Until it was grounded, the 787 could fly up to three hours away from the nearest airport. That's far enough for flights between the U.S. and Europe and some flights over the Arctic, for instance. But Boeing wants permission for flights up to 5.5 hours from the nearest airport. Its 777 is already certified for such flights.

Boeing said last month that it was close to submitting a plan for those longer flights.

Cutting 100 jobs 'Could Save Contact $9.4m' | Stuff.co.nz

Wellington-based Contact Energy's plan to lay off about 100 of its 1100 staff by the middle of the year is casting doubt on many high-paying jobs in the city.

Contact Energy is among the top five payers of big sharemarket-listed companies, paying an average of $93,768 an employee in 2011. Almost 23 per cent of staff made more than $100,000 a year.

Contact's job cuts are part of a plan to chop $40 million in yearly costs. But the $40m included cutting procurement costs for anything from office stationery to power turbines, and rationalising IT systems, as well as job cuts.

Cutting 100 jobs at an average salary would save the company about $9.4m a year.

Contact's head office has 270 staff and its retail operation has 150 people in Wellington. The two sites are being combined, with retail staff moving into the head office building in coming months. The retail staff look after marketing and call centre management.

Contact also employs 100 call centre staff in Levin and 130 in Dunedin. Although the whole business was being looked at, Contact said it did not expect any "material" cuts at the call centres.

"We will be taking great care that any of the reductions don't impact on the reliability and safety of operations or customer service," a spokesman said. Contact was not considering outsourcing the call centres to other countries.

The changes were being made so the company could continue to offer competitive services to customers, but the spokesman would not say if that meant power prices could be cut as a result. Contact has about half a million customers.

Contact employs 160 fulltime staff at its geothermal power station in Taupo, excluding contractors working on the new Te Mihi geothermal power station.

Labour's finance spokesman David Parker said recent job losses, including those at Contact, 200 at Mainzeal and 100 at New Zealand Post offshoot Datamail, were a "shocking indictment". "It's showing the Government's economic programme isn't working," he said.

Prime Minister John Key said a "minor" restructuring at Contact Energy did not mean a lot for the rest of the industry.

Contact made no formal announcement to the stock exchange about the planned job cuts, but made an "internal" announcement on Wednesday, which then leaked out.

It said it was too early to specify how many and where the jobs would be cut.

TuneCore Is Now Considering Legal Action Against Jeff Price...

Thursday, February 14, 2013
by ?paul

But this isn't just a battle between Jeff Price and his former company anymore. ?It's also a war that involves co-founders?Peter Wells and Gary Burke, not to mention a group of unhappy shareholders. ?In fact, one of those shareholders has now shared internal documents with Digital Music News pointing to a pending legal attack against Price & Co. ?

In a February 5th memo stamped 'Confidential' from the TuneCore Board of Directors to shareholders, the company strongly suggested that legal action against the original co-founders was forthcoming. ?The stated reason is that Price, along with Wells and Burke, have apparently been hatching a TuneCore competitive service, with Burke accused of conspiring while still employed at TuneCore.

?

?

Whether this competitive plot violates other agreements was not specified. ?"It has come to the attention of the Board that Mr. Jeff Price, Mr. Peter Wells, and Mr. Gary Burke have been working together to launch a new company that may be competitive with TuneCore while Mr. Burke was still employed at and paid by TuneCore. ?These actions are in breach of various legal agreements, and are in direct conflict with outcries from Mr. Price and Mr. Wells that they have the TuneCore's best interests in mind. ?

?

?

The warning shot is part of a broader set of vitriolic volleys. ?In an exclusive interview with Digital Music News last October, Price claimed that his firing was 'without cause' and part of a 'grudge' from TuneCore investor and Board member Gill Cogan. ?Indeed, shortly after his firing, TuneCore attempted to arrange interviews and coverage with Digital Music News, but only on the condition that Price's name be kept completely out of the coverage (of course, we refused).

Then there's the rumored pissing match over a $500 expense report submitted by Price. ?That amount is actually $522, according to the stakeholder, and TuneCore is flatly refusing reimbursement. ?"TuneCore, for reasons unknown, will not stop trying to persecute Jeff Price," the stakeholder shared. ?"This is obviously personal for TuneCore."

?

?

Separately, the Board also noted that outside investment bankers have now been hired to investigate financing or 'strategic relationship' possibilities. ?Which could be a play to finally flip this thing, warts and all. ?"During 2012, the Board introduced to management and subsequently retained a boutique investment banking firm with knowledge and expertise in media companies. ?The reason for retaining this firm was to assist management in raising capital and exploring strategic relationships." ?

?

Amputee Olympic star Pistorius charged in slaying

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) ? Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee sprinter dubbed the Blade Runner, was charged Thursday in the Valentine's Day slaying of his girlfriend at his upscale home in South Africa, a shocking twist to one of the feel-good stories of last summer's Olympics.

Pistorius buried his face in the hood of his workout jacket as officers escorted him from a police station after his arrest in the shooting death of Reeva Steenkamp, a 30-year-old model who had spoken out on Twitter against rape and abuse of women.

Police said she was shot four times in the pre-dawn hours at Pistorius' villa in a gated community in the capital, Pretoria. Officers found a 9 mm pistol inside the home and arrested Pistorius on a murder charge.

What sparked the shooting remained unclear, but police said they had received calls in the past about domestic altercations at the home of the 26-year-old athlete, who has spoken publicly about his love of firearms.

A police spokeswoman, Brigadier Denise Beukes, said the incidents included "allegations of a domestic nature."

"I'm not going to elaborate on it, but there have been incidents," Beukes said. She said Pistorius was home at the time of Steenkamp's death and "there is no other suspect involved."

Pistorius made history in the London Games when he became the first double-amputee track athlete to compete in the Olympics. He didn't win a medal but did make the semifinals of the 400 meters and became an international star.

Thursday, companies quickly removed billboards and advertising featuring Pistorius, a national hero in South Africa who also inspired fans worldwide with the image of his high-tech carbon-fiber blades whipping through the air.

Kenny Oldwage, Pistorius' lawyer, told reporters the athlete was "emotional" after his arrest, "but he is keeping up." He said he planned to seek bail for Pistorius at a preliminary hearing Friday.

Pistorius has had troubles in the past in his personal life, which often featured fast cars, cage fighters and women.

In February 2009, he crashed a speedboat on South Africa's Vaal River, breaking his nose, jaw and several ribs and damaging an eye socket. He required 180 stitches to his face. Witnesses said he had been drinking, and officers found alcoholic beverages in the wreckage, though they did not do blood tests.

In November, Pistorius was involved in an altercation over a woman with a local coal mining millionaire, South African media reported. The two men involved the South African Police Service's elite Hawks investigative unit before settling the matter.

Pistorius' father, Henke Pistorius, said Thursday: "We all pray for guidance and strength for Oscar and the lady's parents."

A spokeswoman for Pistorius at Fast Track, an international sports marketing agency in London, said the athlete was assisting with the investigation and there would be no further comment "until matters become clearer."

The sprinter's former coach, Andrea Giannini, said he hoped the shooting was "just a tragic accident."

"No matter how bad the situation was, Oscar always stayed calm and positive," Giannini told The Associated Press in Italy. "Whenever he was tired or nervous, he was still extremely nice to people. I never saw him violent."

Firearms captivated Pistorius, the subject of an online Nike advertisement that featured him with the caption: "I am a bullet in the chamber." In November 2011, he posted a photograph on Twitter of himself at a shooting range, bragging about his score. "Had a 96% headshot over 300m from 50shots! Bam!" he wrote.

Linked to a number of women by the South African media, Pistorius and Steenkamp were first seen together publicly in November. She was named one of the world's 100 Sexiest Women for two years running by the men's magazine FHM.

The leggy blonde with a law degree also appeared in international and South African ads and was a celebrity contestant on "Tropika Island of Treasure," a South African reality show filmed in Jamaica.

While known for her bikini-clad, vamping photo spreads, she tweeted messages urging women to stand up against rape. Her tweets also focused on Pistorius, with one of her last messages noting her excitement over Valentine's Day.

"What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow?" she wrote. "It should be a day of love for everyone."

Police have not publicly named Steenkamp as the victim, saying only that a 30-year-old woman was killed. Steenkamp's publicist, however, confirmed in a statement that the model had died.

"Everyone is simply devastated," the publicist, Sarit Tomlinson, said. "She was the kindest, sweetest human being; an angel on earth and will be sorely missed."

Police arrived at Pistorius' home after 3 a.m., and paramedics tried unsuccessfully to revive Steenkamp, police spokeswoman Lt. Col. Katlego Mogale said.

Officers later took Pistorius to a hospital so doctors could collect samples for DNA testing and check his blood alcohol content.

Pistorius had both legs amputated below the knee before his first birthday because of a congenital condition, and campaigned for years to be allowed to compete against able-bodied athletes.

He was initially banned because of his carbon fiber blades ? which critics said gave him an unfair advantage ? before being cleared by sport's highest court in 2008.

He was a last-minute selection to South Africa's Olympic team, competing in the 400 meters and the 4x400 relay. He later retained his Paralympic title in the 400 meters.

South Africa's Sports Confederation, its Olympic committee and the International Paralympic Committee all had no comment on the shooting.

Shock rippled across South Africa, a nation of 50 million where nearly 50 people are killed each day, one of the world's highest murder rates. U.N. statistics say South Africa also has the second highest rate of shooting deaths in the world, behind only Colombia.

"The question is: Why does this story make the news? Yes, because they are both celebrities, but this is happening on every single day in South Africa," said Adele Kirsten, a member of Gun Free South Africa.

"We have thousands of people killed annually by gun violence in our country. So the anger is about that it is preventable."

Golf has an offseason if the players want

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Graeme McDowell tried not to watch golf on TV the last few months to avoid the temptation to play. Adam Scott has been so far removed from the game that he didn't learn about Phil Mickelson's cruel lipout for a 59 until he finished his pro-am round Wednesday at Riviera.

"Was it a big lipout? Oh, that stinks," Scott said.

It's not that news travels slowly Down Under. But when the 32-year-old Australian gets away from golf, he really gets away. Asked if he had any idea what's gone on over the last six weeks of the PGA Tour season, Scott mentioned Brandt Snedeker winning at Pebble Beach after being runner-up in consecutive weeks.

"I know Brandt is playing really good," he said. "I was in America last weekend."

As much as golf is played around the clock and around the world, there's still time for a long winter's nap. The offseason is as long as players want it to be.

McDowell, Scott and Luke Donald are proof of that.

They are playing together the opening two rounds of the Northern Trust Open, which is only fitting. They are the only three players from the top 20 in the world who have yet to play anywhere in the world this year.

Donald last played in Dubai last November. McDowell hasn't played since winning the World Challenge up the road at Sherwood the week after Thanksgiving. Scott's most recent tournament was the second weekend of December at the Australian Open.

It's a formula that works for Donald.

Two years ago, he returned from a long break, shot 79 in the second round at Riviera to miss the cut, and then won a week later in the Match Play Championship, the first step toward going to No. 1 in the world.

"It's been a long year, and it's hard to find breaks and it's hard to find time where you can actually work on your swing to try and make some improvements with your game," Donald said. "So I took a decent amount of time off, but I feel rested, ready to go."

McDowell learned the hard day. Coming off his dream season in 2010 ? a U.S. Open title at Pebble Beach, the clinching point for Europe in the Ryder Cup, coming from four shots behind to beat Tiger Woods at Sherwood ? he started up again in Hawaii and never felt like he had time to recharge.

He took 10 weeks off this year, the longest break since he can remember. It was long enough to joke about the white legs of his English caddie, Ken Comboy.

And he has no regrets.

"You have to be disciplined enough to do it," McDowell said as he walked down the first fairway on a gorgeous day off Sunset Boulevard. "I resisted the temptation to turn the TV on the last month to see guys at Kapalua, to see guys at Torrey Pines, to see guys at Phoenix. It's hard especially for the guys playing two tours. You play right up into December and then you've got to tee it up in the Middle East. If you play the European Tour, there is no offseason."

McDowell said he has been bombarded with tweets from his followers in recent weeks, asking why he wasn't at Abu Dhabi or any of the West Coast events on the PGA Tour.

"It's hard to turn down great purses, great sponsors, great courses," he said. "But you've got to pick and choose if you want career longevity."

This is one course he didn't want to miss, and that's true for so many others.

Riviera is one of the classic courses on the PGA Tour, and the field is so deep that three players who finished in the top 10 last week at Pebble Beach did not get into the Northern Trust because there wasn't any room for them.

It is the strongest field on the PGA Tour this year, with 16 of the top 25 players from the world ranking.

"This is why a lot of guys fly a long way to get here," Ernie Els said.

Fred Couples is playing for the 31st time, simply because he loves Riviera and it's one of the courses where he still feels he can win. Couples won this tournament twice.

Scott won at Riviera, even though it didn't count. The tournament was hit so hard by rain in 2005 that it took until Monday before 36 holes could be completed, and he won in a playoff. Because it was 36 holes, all he got was the money ? not an official win.

Weather shouldn't be an issue this week, with sunshine in the forecast through Sunday.

Scott's swing looked as sweet as ever on the range and in his pro-am round, and there's a reason for that. While he hasn't played competitively since the Australian Open in Sydney, he has been playing plenty of golf.

"Having this break has been really good for me," Scott said. "I've played a lot of golf, actually. I'm loving golf. A couple of years ago, my frustration level was so high I could have gone six weeks without playing. I like playing now, playing with my mom and dad, and I've played a lot."

Most of his golf was played in Queensland while he was home, and it included a trip with his parents to Barnbougle in Tasmania. He is anything but rusty, though the next few days will give him a gauge on tournament golf.

This break was not an accident. Scott plans to play four of the next five weeks, only missing the Honda Classic. His aim, like other players, is to be fresh in the summer.

"There isn't a long offseason is you don't want there to be one," Scott said. "I've played plenty of golf over the last 10 or 12 years as a pro, and I'm going to play heaps more. Missing a few events is not going to hurt me. My main focus is to be prepared, being fresh and ready during the major season. If you rush out and play a bunch early, when June comes around, you're fatigued early. And that's the biggest golf there is."

IOC Meetings

FILE - In this Monday, Aug. 6, 2012 file photo Amer Hrustanovic of Austria competes against Damian Janikowski of Poland, in blue, during the 84-kg Greco-Roman wrestling competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics, in London. An official familiar with the decision says IOC leaders have dropped wrestling from the program for the 2020 Olympics. In a surprise decision Tuesday Feb. 12, 2013, the official tells The Associated Press that the IOC executive board decided to retain modern pentathlon and remove wrestling instead.

Paul Sancya, File ? AP Photo

Rulon Gardner's epic upset of Russian wrestling great Alexander Karelin in 2000 remains one of the most compelling moments of the modern Olympics.

Starting in 2020, youngsters looking to Gardner and Karelin for inspiration won't have a chance to excel on the sport's biggest stage.

Gardner and nearly everyone else associated with the sport in the U.S. were jolted Tuesday when International Olympic Committee leaders dropped wrestling from the Summer Games.

The move is set to take effect for the 2020 Olympics and eliminates a sport that's been a staple of both the ancient and modern games.

"It's the IOC trying to change the Olympics to make it more mainstream and more viewer-friendly instead of sticking to what they founded the Olympics on, and that was basically amateur sports," Gardner told The Associated Press by phone from Logan, Utah. "To get the death penalty out of nowhere."

The decision by the IOC to phase out wrestling will leave the U.S. without one of its most successful Olympic sports.

The only sports in which the Americans have won more medals than wrestling is swimming and track and field - and those two have far more medal opportunities.

Americans have won a record 113 freestyle Olympic medals, by far the most of any nation. Though the U.S. had slipped in recent Olympic cycles, it bounced back with a pair of London Games gold medalists in Jordan Burroughs - possibly the best wrestler in the world - and Jake Varner.

"I do think wrestling people are the strongest in the world, and they're resilient. And we'll come out of whatever happens. But short term, yeah, it's sad," 2004 Olympic gold medalist and Penn State coach Cael Sanderson said.

"I just think of the kids in our program that dream of being Olympic champions. And to think that now that's no longer an opportunity just so the IOC stay fresh and continue to rotate sports and whatever their plan is - it's tough to think about."

Wrestling is also one of the most popular youth sports in the U.S. The National Federation of State High School Associations reports that the sport was sixth among prep boys with nearly 275,000 competing in 2010-11.

"Wrestling is the Olympics. It's the toughest, most grueling, most demanding and most humbling sport there is. It teaches you so many life lessons," said Jake Herbert, who wrestled for the U.S. in the London Games.

Wrestling will now join seven other sports in applying for inclusion in 2020. The others are a combined bid from baseball and softball, karate, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu. They will be vying for a single opening in 2020.

USA Wrestling executive director Richard Bender calls his sport "one of the most diverse," with nearly 200 nations from all continents participating.

"It is an inclusive sport which provides opportunities worldwide, regardless of geography, race, gender or physical characteristics," he said. "We look forward to telling the story about wrestling to the International Committee leadership and the entire world about our great sport and why it should be part of the Olympic movement forever."

The IOC executive board will meet in May in St. Petersburg, Russia, to decide which sport or sports to propose for 2020. The final vote will be in September in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

"Given the history and tradition of wrestling, and its popularity and universality, we were surprised when the decision was announced," U.S. Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun said. "It is important to remember that today's action is a recommendation, and we hope that there will be a meaningful opportunity to discuss the important role that wrestling plays in the sports landscape both in the United States and around the world."

Rejoining the Olympic roster for 2020 seems unlikely. Still, former Olympic champion and current Iowa coach Tom Brands said the international wrestling community needs to fight this ouster.

"It's one of those things where your first thoughts are pretty bad," Brands said. "There's nothing more sacred to living than learning to overcome struggle. Wrestling is that equivalent, more than any other form of sport, recreation or entertainment. It's worse than death because you can't control death, and this is something that maybe we can control or could have controlled. We need to look forward to May and the process in September."

Reaction to the move was swift on social media. A Facebook page titled "Save Olympic Wrestling" was started Tuesday morning and had nearly 5,000 members by noon. A number of fellow Olympians also displayed their displeasure over the decision on Twitter by using the hashtag (hash)SaveOlympicWrestling.

Wrestling can be tough for the average Olympics fan to follow, which is why it rarely earns a TV slot in prime time. Its scoring system can seem complicated and arcane to newcomers. The medal stand is often dominated by athletes who aren't nearly as marketable as gymnasts and swimmers.

Still, it produces memorable characters like Karelin, the prolifically strong three-time Olympic champion and hero in his native Russia. There are also American icons like Sanderson and Gardner, who beat Karelin and later survived both a plane crash and frostbite.

"It just seems like wrestling, if we don't fight we're going to die," Gardner said. "At this point, it's time for everybody to man up and support the program."

Real Racing 3 coming Feb. 28, speeding down the freemium route in the process

Android Central

Some great news has emerged for those eagerly awaiting the arrival of the latest in the Real Racing series, Real Racing 3. The title now has a release date, and a price. The so far stunning looking title will be dropping into Google Play on Feb. 28 and will be a completely free download.

That's right, Real Racing 3 will be a freemium title. Knowing that would be met with mixed reaction, the developers, Firemonkeys, made a statement regarding the decision:

Today we announced Real Racing 3 will be free. And yes, Real Racing 3 was designed from the ground up to be a free to play experience. We are so excited about this game and wanted it to be accessible to everyone so we didn't want there to be any barriers to entry. This accessibility is also what drives the awesome new Time Shifted Multiplayer feature, in that you can play competitive multiplayer with anyone any time, and they don't need to be online with you at the same time. At launch we have 46 licensed vehicles covering 3 classes, a 22 car grid, real world tracks, 8 varied event types and 900+ events. This means hundreds of hours of gameplay for free making this one of the most expansive games ever on mobile. We plan to continue to add more free and exciting content with every update.

Doesn't sound all that scary, and being free to download will potentially drive higher initial download figures. In any case,  we're looking forward to this one a lot, and thankfully we only have a couple more weeks to wait.

BC wins 4th straight Beanpot, 6-3 over N'eastern

BOSTON (AP) ? Johnny Gaudreau scored twice and Parker Milner stopped 20 shots to lead No. 4 Boston College to a 6-3 victory over Northeastern on Monday night and give the Eagles their fourth consecutive Beanpot title.

Already the defending national champions ? the Eagles (17-7-2) have won three of the last five NCAA titles ? this class of BC seniors is the first in school history to go unbeaten in the annual tournament for college hockey bragging rights in Boston.

Harvard (6-15-2) beat No. 13 Boston University 7-4 in the consolation game earlier Monday.

Kevin Roy, who had a hat trick in Northeastern's first-round victory over BU (13-12-1), had a pair of goals for the Huskies. Despite the loss, Roy was named the tournament's most outstanding player.

Milner, the most outstanding player from last year's NCAA Frozen Four, received the Eberle Award as the Beanpot's best goaltender.

Chris Rawlings made 24 saves for Northeastern (8-14-3), which surprised Boston University in the first round by sending the Terriers to the consolation game, where they've played just four times in 30 years.

Boston College fans chanted "Four more years!" as the final seconds ticked off the clock, then threw red and yellow streamers toward the ice as the Eagles spilled out of their bench for the now-familiar celebration.

Bill Arnold and Patrick Brown also scored for BC, and Steven Whitney beat the buzzer with 0.4 seconds left in the second period to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead.

Northeastern made it a one-goal game on a goal from Roy just 11 seconds into the third period and one from Braden Pimm less than four minutes later. But Eagles defenseman Michael Matheson stickhandled through the middle, drawing the defense to him before backhanding it by Gaudreau to make it 5-3 with 5:23 left.

Pat Mullane added an empty-netter with 88 seconds left.

Northeastern has not won the tournament since 1988 ? the longest losing streak of the area's four college hockey powers. Harvard last won in 1993, and BU won its unprecedented 29th Beanpot in 2009 before BC went on its current run.

BC beat Harvard 4-1 in the first round and Northeastern beat BU 3-2.

Roy was denied another hat trick when Milner stopped him on a second-period breakaway. The BC goalie also protected a 4-3 lead midway through the third by poking the puck away from Roy, who was alone in front of the net.
