Google Translate on Android gains offline support for thrifty globetrotters

Travelers face a dilemma: they'll often leave a phone in airplane mode to avoid expensive roaming rates or a foreign SIM, but staying offline can break the translation services that might prove vital in a strange land. Google must have heard their plight, as a new version of Google Translate on Android adds the option to download offline packs for 50 different languages. They aren't as full-featured as their cloud-based equivalents, although there's good reason for the trimmed dictionaries -- at least some packs are over 150MB each. Unless space is just too tight, however, anyone with at least Android 2.3 can ask dónde el baño es without risking some bill shock.

The Battleship That Took Over Union Square

During World War I, a 200-foot battleship complete with armaments appeared right in the middle of Union Square. It was a massive presence, taking up almost the entire stretch of public ground for three long years. But how did it get there? And where did it go?

Slide the arrows from left to right for a then-and-now comparison between the 1917 Bain News Service photo of the ship under construction and a Google Street View shot of Union Square in 2010.

The Recruit, as its name implies, was actually a giant wooden fabrication, plopped in the middle of one of NYC's busiest thoroughfares to be the center of the US Navy's New York recruiting effort at the end of World War I. According to the New York Times, it was responsible for enlisting some 25,000 recruits before it "set sail" for Coney Island in 1920. There, it was expected to serve out its time as a recruitment center at the Luna Park amusement park. It never made it, and nobody today seems to know where it finally ended up.

From the south looking north, the buildings around Union Square are still mostly the same. Although in the newer photos you see a few midtown skyscrapers cropping up in the skyline, including the Empire State Building.

Inside the square, there's a large statue of George Washington more or less where the front of the boat was. The statue was first erected in 1856, but it actually used to live in the southwest corner of the park. It was moved to its current location during the reconstruction of the Union Square in 1929. The statue you see in the 1917 photos is actually of the Marquis de Lafayette. It's still there today but hard to see from the street, because it's buried in trees.

Will we ever see a battleship in Union Square again? Nah. The best we can hope for a swarm of surveillance drones buzzing the holiday booths on some cold, distant winter night. And what's the fun in that?

Path Hires Ex-Google, Lytro Finance Head as New CFO - AllThingsD

A little more than two years after launch, Path, the self-proclaimed ?private social network? startup, is beginning to focus more on monetization.

Hence the hiring of Kim Jabal as the company?s first CFO, who will spearhead the large task of eventually turning Path into a profitable service.

Jabal comes to Path after a year-long stint as VP of finance at Lytro, the experimental camera startup, where she handled the company?s finance, accounting and tax-related activities. Previous to that, she spent more than eight years at Google in multiple finance-focused positions, including directorships in the online sales department, investor relations, and ultimately as director of engineering finance.

In an interview, Jabal echoed Path CEO Dave Morin?s recent comments on monetization prospects, focusing in the near term on potential monetization options like virtual goods, or a premium subscription service. Her hiring, too, could begin to dispel the notion that Path is looking for an exit through an acquisition by another major company like Yahoo or Google (the latter of which has courted Path before).

?Look, we?re trying to build a long-term, sustainable company,? Jabal told me. ?We?re not trying to sell the company. I wouldn?t have come if I thought they were going to get bought next month.?

She also made it clear that the company is still looking to heavily recruit software engineers.

Jabal started her first day at Path just last week.

The 68-year-old actor thinks the social networking site is the best place to unleash his silly side and is glad his habit of posting pictures of his right foot in unusual locations - including peeking out from behind the Jonas Brothers and being licked by a cat in China - has gone down so well with his fans.

He enthused: ''I love it. My first tweet was, 'My balls are on fire!' And they were. I was doing a show and excited about it so wanted to share it with the world. I like to post pictures of my right foot in various places. It's called Troll Foot.

''I've snapped it up the Eiffel tower and all over the world. It's just my thing. And besides, I have got a very good-looking foot.''

However, the 'Batman Returns' star hasn't got the luxury of being so open about his life when it comes to the paparazzi and had to use his now grown-up children Lucy, Grace and Jacob as a cover up to sneak out of boring events.

He confessed to Radio Times magazine: ''I've walked out of a couple of plays on Broadway because they were so tedious. ''Luckily I had my kids with me, because if I walk out of a play it's in the papers.

''And it was [once]! I got the call asking me why I walked and I told them my kids were ill. Great excuse.''
