The Tick Hunter

The Tick Hunter

Among animals you don't want sucking sucking your blood, ticks are near the top of the list. These hemophilic arachnids don't just help themselves to your vital fluids, they are also host to nearly a dozen human pathogens including Lyme disease, which afflicted more than 24,000 people in 2011 alone, and the Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever that claimed the life of a six year old North Carolina girl earlier this year. Lucky for us, ticks are pretty stupid. They'll hop aboard anything that so much as looks and smells like a suitable host?even if it's coated in pesticide. It's this overzealous nature that Virginia Military Institute engineers hope to exploit with their ingenious new tick-hunting rover.

Scottish News: Emergency landing for RAF Tornado

A Tornado jet has had to make an emergency landing at a Scottish airport after a bird strike.

The GR4 aircraft from Norfolk's RAF Marham landed at Prestwick Airport, Ayrshire, following the incident shortly after 10.30pm on Monday.

The two-person jet, which was on a training mission, was still at the airport on Tuesday afternoon, being checked over by engineers.

It is not yet known if it suffered any damage as a result of the incident.

An RAF spokesman said: "The two-seater aircraft was on a standard training mission in Scotland. It had a bird strike. The crew were aware of it and they made a precautionary landing into Prestwick. The aircraft is still there and it's awaiting engineering assistance before recovery."

It is not clear how long the jet will remain at the airport, the spokesman added. He said the aircraft, carrying a pilot and a weapons systems operator, would have been in the vicinity of Prestwick when the crew made the decision to divert to the airport.

"It landed safely and both crew are fine," he added.

Prestwick Airport said its emergency procedures swung into action after it was made aware of the plan to land the jet.

A spokesman said: "An RAF Tornado experienced a bird strike and declared mayday at 10.36pm last night. Prestwick declared emergency so all the emergency services were there to await the aircraft, which arrived 10 minutes later.

"It landed safely at 10.46pm. The emergency was called off, and everyone stood down, at 11pm precisely."

2nd body found in N.Y. river where best man fell in

PIERMONT, N.Y. (AP) ? A day after a bride-to-be was pulled dead from the Hudson River, the body of her fiance's best man was found a mile downstream Sunday, the second victim of a nighttime crash involving a speedboat and a barge north of New York City.

The deadly collision left the groom-to-be grieving for his intended and his best friend, while facing surgery for his own injuries as another friend is charged with manslaughter ? two weeks before the wedding day.

"I don't think you can put words to what we have to tell these families," Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco said as he announced that a body believed to be that of Mark Lennon, 30, the best man, was found Sunday morning.

At the church where Lindsey Stewart and Brian Bond, both 30, would have been married Aug. 10, the pastor said their lives "were filled with hopes and dreams, and that has been snuffed away."

Stewart, Bond, Lennon and three others were on a speedboat that crashed Friday night into a barge holding equipment for the construction of a replacement for the Tappan Zee.

The group had left the village of Piermont for a short trip aboard the 21-foot Stingray across the river to Tarrytown, about 30 miles north of New York City, authorities said.

Police said it was being piloted by Jojo John, 35, of Nyack, whom they suspect was intoxicated and who has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and vehicular assault.

Stewart and Lennon were thrown off the boat. When the bodies were found, they did not have life vests on, said Sheriff's Department Chief William Barbera.

Bond, John and two others, whose names have not been made public because they are witnesses, were injured and hospitalized.

One of the witnesses has been released from the hospital, Falco said Sunday. Mitchell Turk, a friend of Bond's family, said Bond would be undergoing surgery on Monday.

Turk, of Orangetown, said he visited with Bond's mother on Sunday at her Pearl River home.

"It's sad and quiet there, long faces," he said. "They're trying to carry on, doing as well as can be expected. I'm a little shaken. When you think of what they've lost, a daughter-in-law, Brian injured, it's tough."

Turk's daughter, Sheryl Palacio, said she has known Bond, an art teacher, all her life.

"He's an outstanding teacher, a wonderful, kind, respectful man," she said.

She said Lennon was Bond's best friend and John was "his other best friend." She described the suspect as "a good man, happy and loving."

She said John "would never, ever want to put his friends in danger."

"I just hope Brian is able to move past this," she added.

It was not clear if John had an attorney. Falco said a mug shot of John released Sunday was from a previous arrest, but he would not elaborate.

At Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Pearl River, where Stewart and Bond had planned to get married, the Rev. John Havrilla said he remembered them as children. He told The Journal News that Stewart, who worked for an insurance company, was an important part of the congregation.

"Her loss, and the wedding, just makes this even more of a heartache," he said.

Falco said the body believed to be Lennon's was discovered by a person on a recreational watercraft who then called 911. Twelve search boats were on the water at the time. The county medical examiner will have to officially identify both bodies but police feel sure they are Stewart's and Lennon's.

The sheriff said the barge's lighting would be part of the investigation of the crash. Authorities have said the barge was equipped with lights, but it was still difficult to see on the water late at night.

A spokesman for the $3.9 billion bridge project said the barges were properly lit Friday night, but lighting has since been added.

"We will determine if those barges were lit properly and if it was a factor," Falco said.

Pre-construction work related to the new bridge was suspended for the weekend but is to resume Monday.

Simple Personal Development Tips That Can Greatly Improve Your ...

Self improvement is really doing things that will improve your awareness and your identity. It involves improving knowledge, self-awareness, spiritual development and succeeding with your personal goals. This article will give you many ideas for working on your personal development. When you put a few personal development tips into action, you will soon understand both who you are and who you want to be.

Personal development starts with leadership. Most people would define leadership to mean someone who has influence over others. Review your total experiences as a leader. Which past events have had major, formative effects on your life? What were the root changes that occurred? What is the key element that makes you behave as a team player? When you can answer those questions, you?ll know how to be part of a team.

Instead of bragging about your accomplishments, ask those around you about what they are most proud of and what they?ve achieved. This will provide you valuable insight into the others around you, and enable you to see how much others contribute each and every day.

If you are trying to manage your depression, eat more foods that are high in complex carbohydrates. Serotonin can lower if you don?t eat enough carbs. Raw vegetables along with fresh fruits, whole grains and nuts are good sources of complex carbohydrates.

No matter what it is you need, and what you are going to do to get it, there is something that every person on this planet must do in their lifetime. You must live life to the fullest, and avoid being a spectator who watches the world go by. Sitting back and watching will make you dull and unhappy.

It?s possible to teach yourself how you can deal with difficult situations without becoming too emotional. Learning ways to maintain your composure when stressed will help boost your self-esteem, and help you triumph under any circumstance. Take some time during your day to stop and take breaths.

Personal development goals that improve your health will improve many other areas of your life. It?s a well-known fact that a healthy body is a happy body. Your mind will be sharper, and you won?t have to pay for unneeded doctor visits or have to take the time off to be ill. Make a concerted effort to adopt healthy practices.

Think of your personal development as a lifelong lifestyle change. If you sit around wishing for a certain kind of life and don?t act toward making that life reality, then you will obviously never have that life. Therefore, you should get off your butt, and actually do something to turn your dream into a reality.

Having a strong sense of self discipline, can really help you excel in achieving your self improvement goals. Learn to exercise restraint over the desires of the flesh to achieve a higher level of self control. Eliminate your flesh?s desires, such as greed, drunkenness, lust, and overeating. If you acquire a better sense of discipline, it will be possible for you to keep dangerous vices from damaging your body and soul.

Your body affects your mind and your moods. Workout regularly and try to consume a healthy diet packed with nutrient-rich foods. A healthy spirit and physical state are one and the same.

An overreaction to situations is going to cause you stress that is not necessary. Think about the situation, and try to find constructive ways to deal with it. A mistake isn?t the end of the world. Most mistakes can be rectified, and many can be remedied in a way that ends up better than if you hadn?t made a mistake to begin with. Successful people know that learning from your mistakes, and not simply the fact that you?ve made mistakes, is the key.

You should listen far more than you should speak. This is particularly true if you want to improve yourself. Always be sure to listen, and understand what you?re saying to yourself. If you don?t, you won?t understand your needs and that can make better yourself nearly impossible.

Any type of personal development requires that you judge your progress. Use the great suggestions and tips offered in this article to help you take stock, improve and move forward. Write down the processes you use on a regular basis and record changes that occur.

Jimmie Johnson breaks down late mistake that cost him victory at NASCAR Sprint Cup's Brickyard 400 - NASCAR News | FOX Sports on MSN

Updated?Jul 29, 2013 3:10 PM ET

?

INDIANAPOLIS

It seems that the only time a team beats Jimmie Johnson is when he beats himself.

On Sunday, Johnson led 73 of the first 132 laps at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. When he drove onto pit road for the No. 48 team?s final pit service on Lap 133, commentators touted it as ?the money stop.? At that point, Johnson appeared destined to convert the 20th running of the Brickyard 400 into a record-setting fifth victory.

But the Lowe?s Chevy sat in its pitbox for what seemed like an eternity to Johnson. The 17.2-second four-tire stop was uncharacteristic for the five-time champion team. Although Johnson had a comfortable lead prior to pitting, the miscue opened the door for the No. 39 Stewart-Haas Racing team to outrun the No. 48 crew for the second time in as many days.

Johnson?s crew chief Chad Knaus had shown his hand. Newman?s crew chief Matt Borland didn?t have to worry whether two tires would be a gamble. Time was on his side ? 6.8-seconds to be exact after both cars returned to the track. While Johnson whittled the lead down to 2.657-seconds over the final 27 laps, Newman?s advantage was just too great to overcome.

?Stuff happens,? Johnson said. ?Everybody scans us. When you're the dominant car, they're going to do the opposite of what you do. I think I pitted before them, so it was an easy call for them to do the opposite. The 2 (tires), gave them the track position they needed. With the mistake, they had good track position.?

Still, with a 75-point lead in the Sprint Cup standings, it?s hard to feel sorry for Jimmie Johnson. While a fifth Brickyard win would have broken the record he currently shares with Jeff Gordon, a victory for the season would have also raised his total for 2013 to five.

But the Indy loss is not the first race the No. 48 Hendrick team gave away this season.

Johnson led the second most laps at Las Vegas and couldn?t close the deal at the end. At Dover, he was black-flagged from jumping the restart after leading 143 of the 400-lap race and finished one circuit off the pace in 17th. Restarts bit ?Five-time? again at Kentucky last month, when Johnson accused eventual winner Matt Kenseth of breaking the speed of the pace car. Johnson uncharacteristically lost his patience ? and his concentration on the racetrack ? as he screamed, ?The 20 should be penalized for stopping everybody on that (expletive) restart?.

Kenseth wasn?t, however, and Johnson went from leading 182 laps to finish ninth.

?We win as a team, lose as a team,? Johnson said. ?There's been some late race mistakes on my behalf that have taken race wins away from us. Granted not a major event like this. But we win as a team, lose as a team. We still ended up second. We have a lot to be proud of over the course of the weekend. We'll do the best to let it roll off our shoulders by (Monday) afternoon.?

By the time the Chase rolls around, the Knaus-led crew will have all of the kinks out the program in time for the 10 races that matter the most. Yes, this is the part of the season where the No. 48 team prepares its equipment and personnel for the playoffs. And with a driver who has won 32 of his 64 career wins on tracks in the Chase, it?s not surprising that Johnson is confident that the ?six-pack? will be his come November.

SUGGESTION BOX

The inaugural Mudsummer Classic at Eldora Speedway was all the rage last week.

When the NASCAR tour moved to Indy for the weekend?s events, speculation began as to whether additional dirt track races would be added to the 2014 schedule. The Dirt Track at Charlotte, Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track and even Batesville Motor Speedway, Bill Davis? 3/8ths oval, were mentioned along with Eldora.

On Thursday, there was talk of taking the Nationwide Series tour to Eldora as well. Despite dirt being all the rage in NASCAR circles, it would be hard to improve on the NNS and truck shows that were once the highlight of Indy weekend at Lucas Oil Raceway. The 0.686-mile oval, situated just about seven miles west of IMS, has provided fans with thrills since AJ Foyt won the first race there in 1961.

Former Sprint Cup champ Matt Kenseth was one of many in attendance at the Brickyard longing for a truck and Nationwide series return at LOR.

?We used to have racing that was exciting 10 miles down the road,? Kenseth said at the Brickyard last weekend. ?And the Nationwide race unfortunately won?t be that exciting. I?m not saying it won?t be exciting it just won?t be as exciting or as good of a race as you would have at (LOR). If I had my wish, you would figure out how to still run Eldora ? maybe do it a different week and still get the trucks and Nationwide back there (LOR), get the house packed and get back to short-track racing. Cause man, that?s entertaining to watch.

?I always looked forward to watching Friday and Saturday on TV or go over to the track and watch. I even ran a couple of them when we were running here on Sundays and had the one big marquee event here, I always thought that made for a great weekend.?

For Saturday?s Nationwide race, which was moved to IMS from LOR two years ago, it would be safe to say there were more fans in attendance at Eldora on Wednesday night. Traditionally, the races at LOR ? which was previously known at Indianapolis Raceway Park ? drew sellout crowds ranging from 35,000 to 47,000.

Kenseth -- who is also the team owner for his son Ross? Late Model effort which won the Night of the Stars 100 on Friday night ? sees a double benefit for NASCAR?s undercard to return to the track.

?It was always good racing plus, there were less people from the Cup garage running the race there at the end,? Kenseth said. ?That?s where you really see the younger drivers and how good they are. We watched Kyle Larson race the other night ? it was pretty amazing. When you go back to short-track racing, I think it gives more young guys a chance, it gives more new guys a chance to get into cars and race and show what they?re made of rather than throwing them out on a 200-mile-an-hour race track right away.?

SOCIALIZING

Yes, Denny we agree with you. When perennial contender Denny Hamlin can?t convert a fourth-place starting position at Indy into a better finish than 18th?.Here is the driver?s reply to a fan on Sunday.

Denny Hamlin @dennyhamlin
This is how you know (crap) is bad. ?@KaseysGirlBritt: Top 20 for @dennyhamlin!! Wooooo?

NUMBERS GAME

11 Consecutive wins for Chevrolet in the Brickyard 400.

14 Laps led by Ryan Newman in his 12 previous starts at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Newman led four times on Sunday for a total of 45 laps.

27 Positions 11th-place Indy finisher Martin Truex Jr. improved from his 38th-place starting position on Sunday.

SAY WHAT?

Ryan Newman shot back at comments made by Kyle Busch after New Hampshire when he replied to why he wasn?t more excited after his first Brickyard 400 victory:

?Ogres don?t have emotion, you know that,? Newman said.

Dow slides on home sales dip; markets await Fed meeting

stocks

Stocks kicked off the week on a weak note as investors hesitated to jump in ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting and a series of key economic reports.

(Read more: 'Rally has gone too far,' Citi strategist says)

The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished 36 points lower, dragged by Bank of America and Hewlett-Packard, after squeezing out its fifth-consecutive weekly rally last week.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also closed lower. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, rose above 13.

Still, the S&P 500 remains on pace for its best monthly gain since October 2011.

Among key S&P Sectors, energy and financials led the laggards, while telecoms gained.

On the economic front, pending home sales dipped 0.4 percent in June, according to the National Association of Realtors, pulling back from a six-year high in the previous month.

About one-fifth of the S&P 500 companies report earnings in the coming week. About half of the S&P 500 has reported earnings so far, with 68 percent beating earnings estimates, and 56 percent topping revenue forecasts, according to data from Thomson Reuters.

However, market attention will mostly be on the Federal Reserve's two-day meeting, which starts on Tuesday and may give an indication of when the central bank's massive asset purchase program will be tailed back. The Bank of England and the European Central Bank will also meet this week.

"All of them are expected to touch on the subject of forward guidance, albeit to various extents," Credit Agricole analysts wrote in a research note. "The clarity of the symphony will determine the level of support to the risk appetite. Should any of them be more explicit (more dovish) about forward guidance, the market can be expected to react in a positive way."

(Read more:Changes to Fed 'forward guidance' could lead to this)

The gross domestic product for the second quarter will be reported on Wednesday and the key payrolls report on Friday.

Meanwhile, Asian equity markets declined across the board as renewed fears of an economic slowdown in China hindered gains. Japanese stocks fell to a new four-week low on the back of the strengthening yen. The dollar-yen hit a new one-month low of 97.61 leading to a sell-off across the export-heavy Nikkei index.
