We review Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus on mobile, which might better be described as Old School Combat 2. Not that we?re complaining
War and military conflicts in the entertainment mediums used to be a lot simpler than they are these days. There?d usually be a big, evil, generic army on one side, and a small band of double-hard macho bastards on the good side. Bullets would fly, one-liners would cut savagely as enemies were killed in imaginative ways, and no one could hit a damn thing with a machine gun.
This held true for films, games, TV and books. But nowadays we insist on realism. A war is fought with tactics, strategy, technology, and the good guys aren?t always good, and certainly don?t always win. But in Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus we?re given a boots-first reminder of how battles used to be won, in a 2D side-scrolling shoot-first-forget-the-questions all-American gun fest.
Whether this is good or bad depends very much on your expectations of a modern shooter, and the depths of nostalgia you?re willing to plunge to uncover your gaming treasures.
Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus dispenses with the intricacy and complexity that makes the franchise so popular on the super-consoles, and perhaps in that respect it?s a mistake to tamper with the formula. It might be better to release the exact same game under a unique name, and avoid potentially upsetting fans by stripping the game right back to its bullet-heavy gun play.
The game puts a variety of weapons in your hand and sets you the simple task of working through the level in a very linear fashion, out-living all the enemies. The action is rampant from the outset, and you?ve got the option of taking the run-and-gun route ? which sees you sprint forward hoping your bullets will land (and they generally do ? or you use the cover and save bullets with careful heads shots.
This latter method requires you to time your shots with a roving reticule as it trains in on enemy soldiers, and then firing off an accurate shot to take them out. Of course, there?s nothing to stop you mixing up the action with both methods, which works to keep your heart pumping as you play.
Dying isn?t too easy, as the game offers more lives, ammo and energy than you could possibly need, which does put an unwanted downturn on the difficulty curve. Bashing through the enemies without a care works a lot better than it should, and sees you power your way through the game in record time.
If you look back at games like Green Beret, Ikari Warriors and even Turrican with a tear in your eye, then the raw, unabashed value of Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus on mobile might well hold a strong retro shmup appeal. It keeps the action at the fore from beginning to end, and it?s hard to criticise a game too harshly for that.
