DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Are you ready for some racing ? some Monday night racing?

NASCAR pushed the start of its season-opening Daytona 500 to Monday night, under the lights and in primetime for the first time in its history.

"We hope to have 'Lady and gentlemen, start your engines,' at 7:02 and then warm up and go to green flag," NASCAR President Mike Helton said. "We believe this is a reasonable expectation."

Helton made the announcement Monday morning when it became clear that steady rain at Daytona International Speedway made an evening start the best option for NASCAR's marquee event. Helton also said Tuesday has not been ruled out.

Heavy rain all day Sunday forced NASCAR to postpone the event for the first time in its 54-year history.

Carl Edwards, runner-up to Tony Stewart in last year's championship race, will start from the pole. Former IndyCar star Danica Patrick will make her Daytona 500 debut.

If NASCAR gets the race in Monday night, aired on Fox, it could produce record ratings for a series that's coming off one of its most compelling seasons. NASCAR also had a strong SpeedWeeks, marked by the return of pack racing, two new winners in the lower series, Patrick winning the pole for the Nationwide Series race and many multi-car accidents.

"Certainly we'd like to think that when we do run the Daytona 500 and the trophy is handed to the winner and there is a Daytona 500 champion for 2012," said Helton, "that that sustains and then launches us into the 2012 season with all the right effort and promotions."

Greg Busch, executive vice president at GMR Marketing, said ratings for a Monday night race will not better what it would have drawn in its regularly scheduled Sunday afternoon slot. But Busch said the primetime showing will be significantly better than a Monday afternoon race.

"This is really the best possible scenario they could have with losing yesterday," Busch said. "It's not ideal in the sense that the perfect scenario would be a scheduled race in a primetime network broadcast where everybody knew that was happening.

"I don't know that you'll get the perfect test, but I think it'll be a great case study to see how it performs, especially versus what was already regularly scheduled at that point."

Ed Goren, vice chairman for Fox Sports Media Group, said the network was unsure what to expect Monday night. He praised Fox's production crew for its coverage during the rain delay Sunday, when Fox drew a 4.5 overnight rating despite no on-track action during nearly four hours of air time.

"The ratings we got yesterday, it really speaks to the anticipation of what is going to be a great Daytona 500 and a great season," Goren said. "The challenge tonight as far as ratings is we are in the middle of February ratings sweeps, and there are significant successful shows on other networks. The question becomes, 'will the loyal NASCAR audience find us?' The casual fan seems to have caught on Sunday for the storylines and the season, but the casual fan who was with us yesterday, now in primetime, has other options.

"So, let them race, and let's find out what happens."

NASCAR officials spent more than four hours Sunday waiting for a window to dry the famed track, but it never came. When the latest storm cell passed over the speedway around 5 p.m., they had little choice but to call it a day.

The Sunday postponement was a huge disappointment.

With several intriguing story lines on tap, NASCAR is hoping to capitalize on the success of last season's down-to-the-wire championship race between Edwards and Stewart.

The most significant of them all could be Patrick. The Daytona 500 is the first of 10 scheduled Sprint Cup Series events for Patrick, who left IndyCar behind for a full-time move to NASCAR. She will race for the Nationwide Series championship driving for JR Motorsports.

Stewart, the three-time and defending champion, is trying to snap a 0-for-13 losing streak in the Daytona 500. His 17 victories at Daytona include everything but the 500, ranking him second on the all-time list behind Dale Earnhardt's 34 wins. Stewart will start third when the green flag drops.

And there's Earnhardt Jr., the 2004 Daytona 500 champion. He takes a 129-race losing streak into the event. His last victory was in 2008, his first season with powerhouse Hendrick Motorsports.

Eight previous Daytona 500s have endured rain delays, the latest in 2009. But never before had storms forced NASCAR's premier event to be moved.

"I think that's a pretty good record for NASCAR," Edwards said. "They've been living right to have 53 of these and never have one postponed. That's pretty spectacular. ... I think NASCAR, they're doing the right thing, you know, not dragging this out."

Noontime showers Sunday sent fans scattering for cover and leaving everyone in wait-and-see mode. Puddles of water formed in parts of the infield, and many fans got drenched as they tried to make the best of a less-than-ideal situation.

"I guess I'm gonna have to win the first Monday Daytona 500," said Greg Biffle, who will start second when the race begins.

The last shortened Daytona 500 was Matt Kenseth's victory three years ago, when rain stopped the event 48 laps from the finish. He was declared the winner while the cars were parked on pit road.

The 2010 race had more than two hours in delays as NASCAR twice stopped the event to fix a pothole in the surface. McMurray held off Earnhardt Jr. to win that race.

This time around, drivers didn't even get in their cars.

Daytona president Joie Chitwood said he understood fans were frustrated about the scheduling change that pushed the race back one week later than usual.

NASCAR and the track made the decision to move the start of the season to address an awkward early off weekend and to avoid potential conflicts with the Super Bowl.

Had the race been run on its traditional Sunday, it would have been completed under a bright, blue sky.

"I'm sure I'm going to have some customers tell me about the date change and the challenges that we have with it," Chitwood said. "But I think weather is unpredictable. I think based on the NASCAR schedule, the TV schedule on whole, this was the right move for the industry. We'll continue to work with the last weekend of February.

"It's unfortunate that this had to happen the first year after we made that change. I'm sure I'll be talking to a number of customers in the next weeks ahead about that situation."

If everybody?s working for the weekend, then brunch is our reward. Unlike grab-and-go breakfast, the best brunches are drawn-out, indulgent meals in good company that inspire you to shake off those covers and then linger over another round of Bloody Marys.

British author Guy Beranger got it right back in 1895 when he set forth ?Brunch: A Plea? in a Hunter?s Weekly article suggesting a late-morning meal instead of the traditional, post-church dinner. ?Brunch is cheerful, sociable and inciting,? he wrote. ?It puts you in a good temper, it makes you satisfied with yourself and your fellow beings, it sweeps away the worries and cobwebs of the week.?

America?s best brunch spots deliver that kind of pick-me-up first and foremost through their food, whether it?s reinterpreting classics, highlighting regional flavors, or simply churning out the most delectable comfort dishes around. But atmosphere counts, too, as does the approval of locals. In San Francisco, that can mean satisfying cravings for fresh goat cheese on toast with lavender oil, while a New Orleans spot specializes in Cajun-inspired fare like hearty sweet potato and duck hash with a cornbread waffle. Other brunch restaurants even rethink the Pop-Tart.

?I think it?s fun to be creative with dishes other than what?s offered on our dinner menu,? says Kim Leali, a sous chef at Chicago?s Publican, which is decorated with corpulent hog portraits (its message seems clear: pig out). ?At brunch, I?m not afraid to mix it up with a Korean or Moroccan-based dish.? That means adventurous diners can bypass the quiche or gingerbread for braised lamb with fried egg, golden turnips, house-made flatbread, and piri-piri.

Yet not all chefs look forward to brunch time. In his nonfiction book "Kitchen Confidential," Anthony Bourdain, a former line cook, called brunch ?punishment? for the B-team cooks (whose supervision is at a minimum) and a ?dumping ground? for the week?s leftovers. For diners, it?s the possibility of crowds or a long wait that can be the biggest brunch turnoff. But these brunch haters remain a vocal minority pushing against the tide of enthusiasm expressed by Beranger and by present-day fans on sites like iheartbrunch.com and brunchlove.com.

Former McAfee CTO Debuts Stealthy Security Technology Startup CrowdStrike With $26M In Funding

George Kurtz, who was formerly the CTO of McAfee, has launched a new security technology company called CrowdStrike. The company is still in stealth mode, but has revealed a $26 million Series A investment from Warburg Pincus (Kurtz was previously an EIR at the private equity firm). Details are still minimal, but as Kurtz explains in a blog post announcing the launch, CrowdStrike is a security technology company focused on helping enterprises and governments protect their most sensitive intellectual property and national security information. The volunteer group has launched a campaign to rejuvenate the 95-year-old stream-fed garden spot, restoring its 17 footbridges, ripping out thickets of invasive ivy and bamboo, and beefing up security.

Despite the decay, Fern Dell remains popular with park visitors, as day-tripping parents and children mingle with tourists out for a promenade and hikers heading up the scrubby hill to the Griffith Observatory.

Few of the 10 million people who visit Griffith Park each year realize, however, that Fern Dell was once a must-see Los Angeles attraction whose fern gardens, terraced pools and footbridges were celebrated in picture postcards.

Soter and others are leading tours of the area, hoping to build support as well as private donations and public funds for the newly organized Griffith Park Historic Fern Dell Preservation Project. She said the cost could exceed $1 million.

On a recent weekday, Soter walked along Fern Dell's meandering 1,800-foot gravel pathway and pointed out problems resulting from years of neglect, budget cuts, relentless vandalism and "expedient fixes that only made things worse."

Three thousand ferns were planted in 1984, but within five months half had been stolen or trampled.

This time, the Friends of Griffith Park, which was formed in 2010, is taking a different tack, rethinking old ideas, accepting hard facts and adopting new goals. The group is partnering with the city to promote the campaign, raise funds, sponsor cleanups and graffiti paint-outs, and develop long-term landscape maintenance strategies, said Gerry Hans, Friends of Griffith Park president.

To address cost and theft concerns, "a plant palette could be developed that emphasizes hardy, low-maintenance ferns and native plants," Hans said. "We don't have to fill the entire canyon with rare ferns."

To be sure, some corners of Fern Dell are still lush and picturesque. Some ferns are descendants of plantings made in 1914, when work began on the man-made idyll tucked in a narrow canyon beside Fern Drive, north of Los Feliz Boulevard, under the direction of city parks superintendent Frank Shearer.

By 1916, more than 400 ferns had been planted in what is now the southern half of the garden. The northern half was developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

The dell became an attraction in the 1920s for visitors, who ventured into the garden in their Sunday best. Eventually, bus operators put it on their sightseeing routes. Movie producers used Fern Dell as a "tropical" backdrop for films.

It has always been a haven for wildlife. Tree frogs and Western toads thrive in the stream. Gray squirrels bound across grassy slopes. Woodpeckers hunt for insects in native sycamores and oaks. Bobcats and coyotes prowl the grounds at night.

The group is preparing an initial assessment paid for by grants from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Griffith J. Griffith Charitable Trust. The findings will help lay the groundwork for a revitalization plan.

"You can see the value in what remains," Hans said. "It is too great a treasure to let go."

Legacy News: Free update to Legacy Family Tree - adds 1940 U.S. ...

We have a fantastic new update for you (free!) which adds the 1940 U.S. census transcription form, new FamilySearch capabilities (auto-matching!), plus several smaller additions and enhancements.

What's New

1940 Census Forms?- with the upcoming release of the 1940 U.S. census (available April 2, 2012) we wanted our users to see what information will be available. Brand new to Legacy's Forms Center are two new forms - the regular form and the supplementary questions. Small examples are below. Here's how to view and print them in Legacy:

In Legacy, click on the Reports button > Books/other tab > Forms Center > Census Forms > US Federal > 1940 and click Preview.

New FamilySearch enhancements

?New AutoMatch feature! Now, instead of manually linking/matching your Legacy individuals to FamilySearch, use the new AutoMatch button.

We also added the ability to start LegacyFamilySearch with just the current person - no more loading the entire database first. On the FamilySearch button in the main toolbar of Legacy, click on the new option "Open Legacy FamilySearch to the current person."

Added the AutoMatch icon to the legend.

Added a new person information bar about the tabs

Added filter actions to manage your filtered list

Added gender coloring in the individual list

Added the ability to copy marriage events back and forth

Export?- added a Check All button to the Privacy tab to make it easier to include all privacy settings.

What's been changed/enhanced

Geo Location Database?- it will now return "United States" instead of "USA" when selecting a location.

Descendant View?- Direct line ancestors are now bolded like they are on other lists.

Web page creation?- added a new option on the Misc. tab to include custom HTML or Script to the section of each document.

Individual's Information Screen?- rearranged toolbar icons to match the Family View order.

Strategic planning for business could follow a selection of formats, but there are some imperative parts that should really be included in every plan. Those elements include:

Articulating a purpose

Setting business goals

Creating methods for achieving each goal

Developing action plans for implementing those techniques

Identifying means for monitoring success

Hopefully, you have previously taken the time to draft a business plan overview, an outline that?s a necessity for any company that has to borrow start-up funds or wants to establish a bank overdraft limit. The business plan definitely help you create your business development process.

A business plan will include a mission statement. That mission statement, your firm?s strategic planning template, will often lay out your business purpose.

As an example, Nike tries hard to be the ?world?s leading sports and fitness company?. In that short sentence, the Corporation has outlined what the company does and will do. It is very important to attempt to be explicit when outlining your purpose. Strategic planning for small business is less effective when the purpose is obscure.

If your purpose is to be an online retailer, you want to choose ?what? items you'll sell. This may also assist you in identifying your marketing niche. Your firm's organizational goals are those things that will allow you to realize your purpose or mission. Some of the things that you could include in this portion of your scheme are:

Source of products to sell, wholesalers to cope with

Hiring a storefront or making a domain

Picking buyers, salespeople, website designers

Finding furnishings for traditional storefronts

Finding funding; borrowing, finding stockholders, and so on.

Guesstimating primary profits, making the first sale, setting a break-even point, creating sales goals

4 incredibly disappointing Back to the Future-inspired products (The Week)

New York ? Mattel excites fans of the '80s films with a plan to manufacture real-life hoverboards. Then it bums them out by revealing that the boards won't actually hoverEver since 1989's Back to the Future Part II was released, fans have dreamt of owning the film's futuristic gadgets. In the second installment in the trilogy starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd as a teenager and a scientist who travel through time in a flying DeLorean,?Fox's?Marty McFly travels to 2015, where cars can fly and shoes can lace themselves. One of the most fascinating advancements was the hoverboard, a floating skateboard that McFly rides in a classic?chase scene. Toymaker Mattel recently announced that, nearly 25 years after the release of the film, it is manufacturing and releasing a real-life hoverboard. There's just one catch: It doesn't hover. Here, a look at Back to the Future-inspired products that are, ultimately, major letdowns:

1. Hoverboard
In the press release touting its hoverboard (a "high-cost item" that will be ready by Christmastime), Mattel cheekily acknowledges that it "does not actually 'hover' ? check back in 2015 for that feature." Instead, the company promises that low-friction pads, similar to those used to move furniture, will allow the board to "glide over most surfaces" and create "multiple whooshing sounds." Here's an idea, says Sean O'Neal at The A.V. Club. Since it doesn't actual hover, "let's just call them 'boards.'"

2. Self-lacing sneakers
In September, Nike caused a stir when it announced that it would release the 2011 Nike MAG, near-exact replicas of the futuristic high tops worn by McFly in Back to the Future Part II. However, unlike in the film, the sneakers do not lace themselves. Though Nike "set nerd hearts aflutter" with the announcement, says Sam Sheffer at The Verge, "we're left disappointed." Basically, "the shoes are lacking their most obviously attractive feature," says O'Neal. But that's not really a dealbreaker, says Casey Chan at Gizmodo. "Everything else about the shoe is as beautiful as when I first fell in love with it." Nike made 1,500 pairs of the sneakers, all of which were auctioned on eBay in September.

3. The DeLorean
A DeLorean DMC-12 that was used in all three installments of the Back to the Future trilogy was auctioned in December, fetching a whopping $541,200. (By comparison, a DeLorean not used in the film is estimated to be worth roughly $30,000.) For that price, says Tim Newcomb at TIME, you'd think the car "actually ran on plutonium."?Geoffrey Golden at Crave jokes, "If the buyer regrets paying that much, he can always go back in time and stop the auction from happening." Or not....

4. Flux Capacitor and Mr. Fusion Upgrade
DeLorean owners need look no further than O'Reilly Auto Parts to buy the two key components for turning their cars into time machines: The Flux Capacitor and the Mr. Fusion Upgrade. Unfortunately, says Amanda Kooser at CNET, "there is a buzzkill 'entertainment purposes only' disclaimer in bold print" on the advertisement, dashing dreams of time travel. Still, "I'm just going to ignore that and continue to live in my geeky fantasy world where Back to the Future is a documentary."
