ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. (AP) ? Police say a western Pennsylvania couple desperate for money to pay for their wedding netted just $18 for the stolen copper wire they cut from more than a dozen utility poles.
North Sewickley police say 23-year-old Joseph Russell and 24-year-old April Cater cut down the wires on August 9, four days before their wedding.
Russell says he was desperate for money because he'd just lost his job and lost a $1,000 deposit after his reception hall abruptly closed down.
Sgt. Jeff Bezce says the couple clearly expected to get more money than they got from the scrap where they sold the copper.
Russell tells WPXI-TV he will pay for the damages. Utility officials say it will cost about $400 to repair the 18 poles that were damaged.

Peptides are chains of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. Craik is a professor at the University of Queensland in Australia, and the video describes his research, which promises to turn kalata-like proteins, called cyclotides, into new drugs for treating health problems, such as antibiotic-resistant bacteria and even AIDS, which affect millions of people worldwide. Proteins already number among the world's most important medicines. Insulin, for instance, is a protein. Many other proteins could become life-saving medicines. But there's a problem with proteins and smaller chunks of proteins called peptides. They cannot be taken by mouth because the body breaks them apart during digestion, just like the protein in meat or soy. The video explains how cyclotides have a strong internal architecture that keeps them active when taken by mouth.
Prized Science's 2011 launch episode is a video featuring the research of Nobel Laureate Ahmed Zewail, Ph.D., winner of the ACS 2011 Priestley Medal, the society's highest honor. Zewail is the Linus Pauling Chair professor of chemistry and professor of physics at the California Institute of Technology and recipient of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The video, Designing the World's Fastest Camera, highlights Zewail's work on imaging chemical and biological events that happen very quickly in a femtosecond, which is a millionth of a billionth of a second. His latest work involves revolutionary new technology that enables scientists to visualize objects, not in three dimensions, but in four dimensions. In doing so, it promises to have sweeping applications in medicine, electronics and biological research.
The ACS administers more than 60 national awards to honor accomplishments in chemistry and service to chemistry. The nomination process involves submission of forms, with winners selected by a committee consisting of ACS members who typically are technical experts in the nominee's specific field of research.

NASHVILLE (Reuters) ? Country duo Burns & Poe are not taking today's high unemployment and lack of government action sitting down. They are standing tall and belting out a tune to Washington politicians, telling them, "I Need A Job."
"I need a job/not a government plan/all I want to do is work with my two hands," the pair sing in a video posted on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-Cfbl9SUF4).
Keith Burns and Michelle Poe, formerly of the trio Trick Pony, pulled the song and video together in just over a month, something almost unheard of in today's country music industry. Then again, desperate times -- marked by a stubborn 9.1 percent unemployment rate -- call for fast action.
"I just thought that was a great thing to say, straight to the point, I need a job. Don't want welfare or a hand-me-down. You know, a job is more than a paycheck. It is dignity, respect and all those things that come with it. Hopefully we got that out," Burns told Reuters.
He penned the tune with his friend John Ritter on a day when the pair didn't have a topic in mind. Burns said the idea popped into his head as Ritter was telling him about his brother who is one of millions of Americans out of work.
Burns and Poe went into the studio the next day to record "I Need A Job" and one week later shot the video.
Although it hasn't yet gone viral on the Web and the song hasn't officially been released to radio, stations in 30 major markets are already playing "I Need a Job," Burns said.
Early on, the duo has found that people either love it or hate it. "The ones who hate it like the administration the way it is; the ones who love it don't like what's going on in Washington right now," Burns said.
The song hits close to home for Poe, who has a brother graduating from college in December. "He has nothing lined up, no work," she said. "But my sister says the song and everything it stands for (is bad). She says if we ask the government for more jobs, then you're calling for more government."
"We didn't write it to draw political lines, it is just about the people who are out of work but who want to and are willing to work," Burns added. "The bottom line is the song is getting a reaction, and that is what we wanted it to do."
Burns said the two are seeing a lot of messages on their Facebook page that say "Great song, very timely, you had me in mind when you wrote it," or "Great song, thank you so much, I'm one of those people who needs work." Fans also say things like "You wrote this song about me" or "You are talking to me."
"I think as the song gets played more and more we will begin to hear more personal stories, because people will start opening up to us and talking to us a little more," Burns said.

STRASBOURG, France (Reuters) ? The European Union faces the biggest challenge in its history, as a crisis of confidence compounds economic and social problems, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said on Wednesday.
"It's a crisis of confidence that has not happened for decades," Barroso said in his annual State of the Union address during a session of the European Parliament in the French city of Strasbourg.
Barroso also said Greece would remain a member of the euro single currency area and that if there was not deeper economic integration among European Union member states, the 27-member bloc faced fragmentation.
WASHINGTON ? Never in the long history of Major League Baseball has any team held a lead in September of eight games or more for a postseason berth and failed to clinch.
Got that? Never happened. Not even once.
And yet it could happen twice in 2011, because the Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves are teetering on the verge of collapsing in the season's final month the way no club has before.
Heading into Monday, each team's once-cushy lead in its respective league's wild-card standings was down to one game with three to play: Boston barely ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL; Atlanta hanging on ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL.
"You don't want to be against the wall," Red Sox DH David Ortiz said, "because there's no way to escape."
According to STATS LLC, the 1995 California Angels blew the largest September lead to miss out on the playoffs ? 7 1/2 games. Five teams wasted seven-game September leads and didn't reach the postseason, as long ago as the 1934 New York Giants, and as recently as the 2009 Detroit Tigers, STATS said.
Turn this year's calendar to the morning of Sept. 6, and the Braves enjoyed a margin of 8 1/2 games in the NL.
Go back to Sept. 4, and the Red Sox began the day owning a nine-game lead for the AL wild card. A handful of days earlier, on Aug. 31, the Red Sox even led their division by 1 1/2 games.
"Obviously, they're struggling a bit, and that happens. But from our perspective, it's more important what we do," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "It's fortuitous that they've had a hard time, but I love the fact that we're taking care of business."
With all six division titles already locked up as of Friday ? not since 1986, when there were only four divisions, had all been sealed so early, STATS found ? the wild-card races give fans something to keep an eye on down the stretch.
Boston was in danger of dropping into a tie with Tampa Bay on Sunday, but Jacoby Ellsbury's three-run homer in the 14th inning helped the Red Sox pull out a 7-4 victory shortly before midnight against the AL East champion New York Yankees in the second game of a day-night doubleheader, salvaging a split.
"It was a BIG win," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said, "but we've got to go down tomorrow and play well."
Starting Monday, the Red Sox wrap up the regular season with three games at the last-place Baltimore Orioles, who took three of four at Fenway Park on Sept. 19-21, while the Rays host the Yankees.
"We've got to go win every game," Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon said. "That's the way it is."
Over in the NL, the Braves host the best-in-baseball Philadelphia Phillies, while the Cardinals get to close by taking on the worst-in-the-majors Houston Astros.
"All the pressure's on St. Louis, because if they don't win, they can't go anywhere. Even if we do lose, they have to win," Atlanta rookie first baseman Freddie Freeman said after his team's 3-0 loss at the Washington Nationals on Sunday. "So that's how I look at it ? and I think how everybody else looks at it, too."
Hmmmmm. Maybe.
The Cardinals decided before their 3-2 comeback victory at the Chicago Cubs on Sunday that they would all wear Hawaiian shirts on their team flight that night. Even manager Tony La Russa was going along with it.
While St. Louis has won 15 of its past 20 games, Atlanta has lost 10 of 15.
"Every missed opportunity in September ? it's big," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said.
Similarly, the Red Sox have lost 15 of their past 21 games, and the Rays have closed the gap even though they're only 14-10 in September.
So what exactly has been going wrong for Boston and Atlanta?
"It's all of us," Boston's Ortiz said. "We're all to blame."
Well, that could be accurate, but to boil it down to the basics: The Red Sox aren't pitching well or playing solid defense lately, while the Braves are having a hard time hitting.
Boston made three errors Sunday, raising its total to 17 over the past 12 games, and the team's starters are 4-12 with a 7.16 ERA this month.
Atlanta, meanwhile, managed only four hits, all singles, on Sunday, and its last 15 batters made outs, seven via strikeout. The first four players in the batting order ? Michael Bourn, Martin Prado, Chipper Jones and Dan Uggla ? combined to go 0 for 16 with five strikeouts against four Nationals pitchers.
Ooooof.
Consider, too, what happened for the Braves when they did give themselves good chances to get on the scoreboard against the Nationals.
In the third inning, they loaded the bases with no outs but came away with nothing.
In the fifth, they had runners on second and third with one out but came away with nothing.
"Since it's crunch time," Uggla said, "there's a little bit of added pressure there."

ANAHEIM, Calif. ? Adrian Beltre hit a two-run homer, Michael Young added an eighth-inning RBI single, and the Texas Rangers eliminated the Los Angeles Angels from the playoff race with a 4-3 victory Monday night.
Elvis Andrus had four hits for the AL West champion Rangers (94-66), who have won eight of nine. Texas also stayed one game ahead of Detroit (93-67) for the league's second-best record and homefield advantage in this weekend's division series.
Peter Bourjos had a run-scoring single in the ninth for the Angels, who began the night three games behind the wild card-leading Red Sox with three to play. Although Boston's woes provided an opportunity, Los Angeles has fallen apart with seven losses in 11 games.

Dan Haren (16-10) yielded nine hits over eight innings in his first home loss since June 7 for the Angels, who will miss the playoffs for the second straight year. Los Angeles had made six of the previous eight postseasons, starting with the Angels' only World Series triumph in 2002.
The Angels had an abundance of chances to stay in this race, too. A day after blowing a three-run lead in the ninth inning of a gut-wrenching home loss to lowly Oakland, the Angels couldn't capitalize on a deliberately short start by Texas' C.J. Wilson, with five Texas relievers outpitching Haren.
Wilson, a 16-game winner, yielded two hits and two walks while working two innings for the Rangers, tuning up before starting Texas' AL division series opener Friday. Rookie Mark Hamburger (1-0) relieved him with 3 2-3 effective innings, earning his first major-league victory.
The Rangers have won four straight late in their stellar September, but must still must keep pushing to hold off AL Central champion Detroit, which beat Cleveland 14-0 and holds the tiebreaker over Texas after winning the clubs' season series.
The Rangers removed any divisional tension from this season-ending series against their liveliest rivals by winning 16 of their first 22 games this month, clinching the AL West last week and taking a season-high-tying seven-game lead last weekend.

Haren had eight strikeouts while reaching a new career high with 238 1-3 innings pitched, giving the Angels three starters with more than 220 innings apiece for the first time in 20 years.

Anger-management cycle
How does the anger in romantic relationships or marriages to build? The answer is always the same ? to build, because several partners, to their anger and dealing with problems in their relationship does not address until it's too late.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) ? Iraq's leadership has changed the draft of a long awaited oil and gas law in a way that would give central government more control over the country's vast crude reserves and provoke a clash with the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.
The law, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters, would give Baghdad more power to manage and develop the OPEC member's petroleum resources, the world's fourth largest.
It alters a 2007 version agreed among political blocs that gave regional powers partial authority over their reserves.
The amendments are set to provoke a political fight between Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's government and the Kurds, who are part of his ruling coalition and wield considerable clout in the Iraqi legislature.
Iraq's Arab-dominated central government, led by Maliki, and the Kurdish region have for years disputed control of Kurdish fields. The row shut down exports from Iraqi Kurdistan from October 2009 to February of this year.
"We're still giving space to discussions to resolve this issue. We have not reached the moment of opening fire on Maliki's government," a senior Kurdish lawmaker told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
The amended law, approved by the cabinet in late August, has been sent to parliament for final passage, but the legislature's speaker Osama al-Nujaifi said talks to resolve the dispute could take a long time.
"The amended draft concentrates authority to sign oil deals in the hands of the central government and the oil ministry, while the Kurdish region sought more power in the process of signing contracts," Nujaifi told Reuters.
"The only way out of this issue is dialogue and discussions ... it will be very complicated," he said.
NEW POWER
The amended law would give the oil ministry authority to hold bidding rounds for most oil and gas fields, leaving currently producing fields and discovered but undeveloped fields close to them in the hands of a newly created Iraqi National Oil Company (INOC).
The 2007 draft version restricted the ministry to auctions for discovered, undeveloped fields.
The changes could result in the inclusion of Kurdish fields in future auctions, which the Kurds say they will not accept.
"The amendments to the draft infringe on the constitution, which stipulates that the central government and regional authorities should jointly run oilfields," said Bayazed Hassan, a Kurdish MP and a member of parliament's energy panel.
Kurdish and central government officials are discussing the amended law at high levels, and the Kurds have made clear they could review their support for Maliki's government if a resolution is not found, officials said.
The new oil law has long been considered vital to securing foreign investment to boost Iraq's oil output, now at around 2.75 million barrels a day, and rebuild its shattered economy. International energy companies want a stable legal framework for oil and gas deals.
Iraqi officials have said petroleum resources belong to all sects and ethnicities in Iraq, and logically the central government should manage them. The Kurdish region and the provinces, particularly oil-rich Basra and Sunni-dominated Anbar, have argued for more local control.
"Enacting a new oil law is essential to develop Iraq's energy sector and we are seeking to have new legislation, away from political wrangling," Oil Ministry spokesman Asim Jihad said. "Any disputed details in the draft should be left for technical teams to resolve, not politicians."
SEAT FOR SHAHRISTANI
The new draft calls for INOC to control coveted, already-producing oilfields -- Kirkuk's 2.3-billion-barrel Bai Hassan, and the 6-billion-barrel Nahr Bin Umar field in the south, for example.
The law would create a federal oil and gas council as the ultimate policy-setter. It would give the council power to approve policies proposed by the oil ministry, agree procedures for negotiating and contracting during bid rounds, and ratify drilling, development and production contracts.
Under the old version, the federal council could only draw up policy and issue instructions.
The new law eliminates a clause that required the council to have Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish representation, and adds a clause reserving a council seat for the deputy prime minister for energy -- now former Oil Minister Hussain al-Shahristani.
Kurdish officials see Shahristani as a major obstacle in the tense relationship between Baghdad and Kurdistan on energy issues. He has called for oil contracts signed by the Kurds to be reviewed by Baghdad and turned into service contracts.
The Kurdistan Regional Government adopted its own oil and gas law in 2007 and signed more than 40 production-sharing contracts with foreign firms, which Baghdad deems illegal.
